For many, today is Black Friday, but in Montpelier, they’re celebrating Flannel Friday and shopping small. “We know that it’s very difficult to support with the large box stores,” said Karen Williams, owner of Woodbury Mountain Toys. “There are so many sales and promotions out there for them to come and support us and to keep us going is great.” Williams has owned the toy store for 25 years. She said the shortened time between Thanksgiving and Christmas means business has been steady.”We had quite a busy week this week after Thanksgiving. We normally do because there’s a lot of families coming into town and visiting their relatives. But I noticed this Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday was pretty busy,” Williams said.While checking off their lists, folks wearing plaid in hopes that the Flannel Fairy would pay them a visit “It is great seeing their smiles on their faces and for them to actually be looking for me. and you get an unexpected gift,” said this year’s fairy, Tina Karparis. The owner of Bailey Road, Sarah DeFelice, says Flannel Friday and Small Business Saturday make downtown Montpelier a special place.”It’s usually a family affair, and people come in groups and shopping groups, and it just feels so small town, lovely, shopping experience compared to parking in big parking lots and the mall,” DeFelice told NBC5. DeFelice encouraged folks to not only shop small but in person too, “You can walk in and smell the candles and touch your clothes and, like, really kind of curate your own gifts, whereas it’s a lot different than what you’re adding to cart on a website.”In addition to the shopping opportunities, horse-drawn carriage rides will be offered on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
