Potato supplier’s net-zero targets validated by Science-Based Targets initiative

The net-zero goals of potato supplier Branston have been recognized by a pioneering organization that supports businesses around the world to tackle the climate crisis. The Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action strategy that enables companies and financial institutions to develop standards, tools, and guidance in leading the way to a net-zero economy. This week, it has approved Branston’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets, which encompasses the company’s near-term within the next 5-10 years, net-zero, and forest, land, and agriculture (FLAG) targets. This showcases Branston’s alignment with SBTi’s rigorous net-zero standard criteria and near-term target criteria and recommendations. Jim Windle, CEO of Branston, said: “As a produce and added value food business in the UK it is important to us that our ambitious climate targets have been validated by the SBTi. This ensures that our approach is robust, credible, transparent, and aligned with acknowledged climate science. These targets represent a key step to developing a thorough climate strategy across all business sectors.” Branston has committed to reaching overall net zero emissions across the value chain by 2050, with a near-term target of 60% in Scope 1 & 2 emissions and 58.8% in Scope 3 by 2033. Branston has also committed to an accelerated ambition target of 90% by 2035 for Scope 1 & 2 and 90% for Scope 3 by 2050, all from a base year of 2021. Branston’s progress towards net zero includes enhanced energy efficiency and greater use of renewable energy. It has nine photovoltaic (PV) systems across its three sites, which generate around 1.3 GWh energy annually as well as an anaerobic digestion plant that supplies 20% of the Lincoln site’s energy from waste potatoes unfit for human consumption. Jim added: “Our team has already stepped up to the climate challenge and shown fantastic ingenuity when it comes to making the entire potato supply chain more environmentally friendly – from the field to shop shelves. By closely monitoring our outputs and consistently researching new opportunities for us to integrate better practices, we’re making great progress. There is of course plenty more to be done but with the backing of the SBTi and a clear pathway to get there, we look forward to working with our customers and suppliers in achieving these goals.” Most recently, Branston has reviewed the opportunities for alternative fuels and is trialing an electric truck within its Scotland fleet and installing electric vehicle charges for staff at all sites. Extensive smart energy monitoring systems are also used to monitor electricity use on all major pieces of equipment to better understand and observe their energy use. Superior boutique plans Small Business Saturday launch

SUPERIOR — For Roni Hinnenkamp, the decision to open her new boutique on Small Business Saturday, the biggest shopping day of the year for small businesses, was on brand.“I’m an all-in-or-nothing type of gal,” said the entrepreneur.

Her shop, Midwest Mamas Co., at 1122 Belknap St. offers a cornucopia of women’s fashions, select children’s and men’s clothing, accessories ranging from headbands and bracelets, and gifts ranging from candles and bath bombs. The store name is a shout-out to parents.“I’m a mom myself and we have a lot of mamas here locally who love to shop,” Hinnenkamp said.

The business was launched in February as an online store with a small rented space at Vintage Hideaway in Hermantown. Hinnenkamp chose to move to Superior after seeing on Facebook that Kindred Stone & Co. was vacating its Belknap Street spot and moving to Tower Avenue.

“I thought that this was the absolute perfect space,” Hinnenkamp said of the Belknap Street opening, which she said has high visibility on a busy street with many small-business neighbors.Nestled between Nummi Jewelers and Belknap Nutrition, the boutique hid behind a screen of balloons while the space was under renovation. Monday, Nov. 25, the balloons had been replaced with twinkling lights, a snow-covered pink tree and a peek at the goodies within — warm sweaters and sweatshirts, leggings, jeans, T-shirts, stocking stuffers and more.“She loves to go above and beyond,” said Hinnenkamp’s husband, Bryan.

Family and faith played a role in the store’s layout and offerings. A children’s play area is in the back of the store with books, sensory toys and a couch. Sweatshirts and other merchandise that celebrate the family’s Christian faith can be found on one of the displays.

“I have always wanted to own my own shop,” Hinnenkamp said.Family gave her the nudge she needed to make it a reality. Hinnenkamp left her full-time position as a toddler teacher at a child care center in order to be more present to address the mental health needs of one of her children.“I had no choice but to stay home. So I was like, now is that time … I’m the type of person (to) jump all in or it’s just not ever going to happen. So I jumped all in,” Hinnenkamp said.

She chose to open a boutique based on her love of clothing shopping. “I have always loved clothing,” she said. “Now I’m shopping for everyone.”The one-month turnaround time from getting the keys to the space to opening didn’t phase the entrepreneur.

“Honestly, I thrive on chaos. I don’t know why, I really do,” Hinnenkamp said. “That’s probably why I’ve had all six of my children help every step of the way through the process.”

The biggest challenges, Hinnenkamp said, have been learning the ins and outs of starting a business, realizing how much it starts to cost, and researching pricing and styles. The biggest reward has been more time with family.“I can include my children in my day-to-day work. It’s very versatile in their schedules and mine and being able to just simply be there for them,” she said. “We’ve bumped heads, but we have also gotten a stronger relationship because I think we’ve had to go through obstacles we probably wouldn’t have without opening a business.”

Midwest Mamas Co. is holding its grand opening from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30. The first 15 customers receive a free goodie bag. There will be a 20% storewide discount through Dec. 6 as part of Superior’s Small Business Week promotion. Chamber wants lower cost of doing business amid GDP upswing

The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation’s (BCCEC) chief executive officer said yesterday that the gross domestic product (GDP) increase for the first half of 2024 needs to be followed by initiatives to lower the cost of doing business, and increase the ease of doing business.Dr. Leo Rolle told Guardian Business yesterday upon the revelation of the GDP growth shown in Bahamas National Statistical Institute’s (BNSI) release of its advance estimates for Q2 2024 that: “We need the lowering of the cost of doing business and the increase in the ease of doing business to follow this growth.”The BNSI said in its advance estimates report for Q2 2024: “The half-year GDP 2024 (which combines 1st and 2nd quarters) shows that the Bahamian economy stood at $6.58 billion. The 2024 half-year recorded an increase of 1.8 percent, slightly outpacing GDP reported in the same period of 2023. This increase in the half-year 2024 was led by the Q2 of 2024, which reported $3.37 billion, an increase of 4.8 percent when compared to the same quarter in 2023, and an increase of five percent compared to the previous quarter. Conversely, the 1st quarter of 2024 reported a GDP of $3.2 billion, representing negative real growth of 1.2 percent, compared to the first quarter of 2023. However, compared to the fourth quarter of 2023, there was an increase of 2.8 percent.”Rolle continued: “It’s a challenge to do necessities, to get a business license renewed, to pay your taxes. The government had an offsetting program where it would offset VAT collected, that has gone away. The process is just a lot of cumbersome aspects that businesses have to muddle their way through.Inflation is also still a concern for businesses. Rolle contends that the rate has slowed down to 0.2 percent, which is a “good thing”, and shows that the country is moving in the right direction.Rolle also said: “The role of the government is to curate an environment that is conducive for the business economy to thrive. Now, the business economy, once that environment is created, has a role then too, to ensure that they create or make an atmosphere that is easier for them to work and ensure they’re more creative in the way that they advertise, market, and create in their undertaking of pricing strategies, and mechanisms for the introduction of new products and services.”He said that businesses are expressing concerns about the upcoming Christmas shopping season, and are making a plea to have an increased police presence around establishments this year. “We want increased police presence in very densely populated areas, especially to keep business owners, the tourists and the general public safe,” Rolle said.“We’ve seen an increase in crimes against the shopping public, against tourists, and we’ve called several times for an increase of police presence. And we know that there was a challenge originally with manpower, and now that they have this list of new recruits that came out, I think it was earlier this month or last month, they can be shifted to those areas where businesses are very prevalent.Pointing to a recent Inter-American Development Bank report that said crime costs the Bahamian economy $100 million annually, Rolle said that by ensuring the police are more visible on the streets during the Christmas season, Bahamians will be less victimized.
