Archetype Entertainment, a studio from ex-BioWare developers, has revealed the first gameplay trailer for Exodus. The game was first announced at The Game Awards in 2023 by Matthew McConaughey, who will have a secret role in it
The gameplay trailer brings many Mass Effect vibes with it. We’ve got a futuristic society, spaceships, intense relationships with crewmates, and time dilation. The game’s combat seems pretty standard for a third-person action-adventure RPG, with plenty of futuristic guns and also a grappling hook.
At one point, the traveler, whose appearance can be customized by players, fights a giant “Awakened” bear in a space suit. We also see a giant toad not unlike Turgle in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and there are plenty of alien species the traveler, called Jun, will befriend and pick fights with. It’s not just about shootouts, as we also see Jun stealthily take down enemies.
Like Mass Effect, Exodus will have structured missions, RPG mechanics like dialog choices, and manage companions that you can choose to bring on quests. The game’s main story sees Jun lead expeditions into space to retrieve ancient Celestial technology.
Time dilation is a major part of the game’s structure, something players will experience after every mission. The traveler’s relationship with the world and companions will change drastically after each exodus. You can read more about the new sci-fi universe’s lore on the official Exodus website.
Exodus is being directed by James Ohlen, who previously worked at BioWare as a lead designer and worked on games such as Star Wars: The Old Republic, Dragon Age: Origins, and the original Baldur’s Gate. Exodus‘ lead writer is Drew Karpyshyn, the lead writer of Mass Effect 1 and 2.
Exodus is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
