Kirstie Allsopp’s Christmas show has returned to Channel 4 this year, with a new setting of Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland.
While Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas is a festive watch, however, the 53-year-old revealed that filming the series had a secret meaning for her. Kirstie’s father, Lord Charles Hindlip, died on June 5 this year, and she shared that he had a connection to the royal setting of her show.
She shared: “My dad died in June, and he was a huge fan of the King and knew the history of Dumfries House. It was very hard to be there and not be able to ring him up and ask him about the furniture, all of that kind of stuff.”
The Location, Location, Location star added: “I was staying at the hotel at Dumfries House and the decor was done by Annabel Elliot, who’s the Queen’s sister, and she was a great friend of my dad. It was really a joy and a privilege to stay there – and I did think about him a lot in that place. It’s just such a magical setting.”

Kirstie’s father reportedly passed away at his home in Dorset, and left behind a multi-million pound estate worth an estimated £6,113,334. Even after deductions, the estate left to Kirstie and her three siblings amounted to £6,080,843, according to The Sun. Lord Hindlip had initially planned to leave the estate to his wife Lady Fiona Hindlip, but she passed away before him in 2014. As such, despite amassing plenty of wealth through her own career, Kirstie was reportedly set to inherit an eye-watering £1.5 million fortune from her dad.
Alongside Kirstie, Lord Hindlip was father to son Henry, 51, Sophie, 44, and Natasha, 38. The Sun claimed that Lord Charles chose to leave several pieces of artwork to his only son Henry, which includes paintings of Lady Emily Berkeley by Sir Thomas Lawrence and of the Cateret family.
Kirstie shared an emotional post on social media following the passing of her father, just a week after she revealed that he was back in hospital, following a prior stint in 2022 during Coronavirus restrictions. Alongside a photo of the Baron, she wrote: “This is my Dad, Charlie Hindlip. He was a great auctioneer, the best of his generation, an artist, a gardener, a father of four, and grandfather of eight, a loving husband to a wife he lost too soon.”
She continued: “He was a real star, he worked hard, played hard and went further than anyone ever expected. He died at home yesterday, surrounded by love, flowers & photographs, in a house he built, looking out over a stunning garden he created from scratch. I have been so proud to be his daughter all my life, and will be until the day I die. Bless you Dad, we loved you so much.”
