A total of six Indian films have made it to the latest list of most-watched non-English films on Netflix in the week ending December 15. These include three Hindi movies, two Tamil and one Telugu films. Headlined by Alia Bhatt, Jigra is on the third slot this week, making it the second consecutive week for the film on the list. Rajkumar Periasamy’s Tamil film Amaran also made it to the list for the second time in a row. Dulquer Salmaan-starrer Lucky Baskhar and Neeraj Pandey’s directorial Sikandar Ka Muqqadar also grabbed spots on the list for the third consecutive week. Pa Ranjith’s Tamil film Thangalaan and Raaj Shaandilyaa’s Hindi outing Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video made their debut on the list this week.
Six Indian films top Netflix’s global list of most-watched non-English films this week
Jigra
Vasan Bala (Monica O My Darling!) directed Jigra which hit theatres on October 11 and landed online on December 6. The film registered 3.8 million views and 9.7 million watch-hours on Netflix in this week alone. Jigra also stars Manoj Pahwa, Vedang Raina (Archies) and Vivek Gomber in important roles alongside Alia Bhatt.
In its debut week, the film made it to the seventh spot on Netflix’s global list of most-watched non-English films in the week ending December 8. The film climbed up the list to make it to third rank in the week ending December 15.
Debashish Irengbam co-wrote the film with director Bala, and they tell the story of an extremely protective sister Satya (Bhatt) and how she rescues her younger brother (Raina) from a major trouble in a foreign land. In the film, Bhatt plays the female version of the typical angry young man from 70s Hindi movies – on her way to saving the young one, she leaves no stone unturned and no rule unbroken.
Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video
Directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video made it to the fourth slot on Netflix’s global list in its debut week on the platform. The film registered 7.8 million watch-hours on Netflix. It released in theatres in October and had a decent box office run.
Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video features Rajkummar Rao, Tripti Dimrii, Mallika Sherawat and Vijay Raaz in lead roles. The film explores many aspects of the lower middle-class in the small towns of the Hindi heartlands in India. Using comedy and romance as a front, the film also boasts of social commentary.
Thangalaan
Pa Ranjith’s Tamil action film, Thangalaan, hit theatres on August 15 and gave a rather dull performance at the box office. In its debut week, the film registered 1.5 million views and 3.7 million watch hours and made it as eighth most-watched non-English film. The film features Parvathy, Vikram and Malvika Mohanan in lead roles.
Sikandar Ka Muqqadar
Neeraj Pandey teamed up with Jimmy Shergill once again for the Netflix India original Sikandar Ka Muqaddar. The film premiered online on November 29 and has remained on Netflix’s global list of most-watched non-English films for the third week in a row. With 1.7 million views and 4.1 million watch-hours, Sikandar Ka Muqaddar was the seventh most-watched non-English film on Netflix for the week that ended on December 15.
Last week, Sikandar Ka Muqaddar featured at the third spot on the list with 4.6 million views. In its debut week, the film registered 3.2 million views and made it to the fourth slot. The film also features Tamannaah Bhatia, Avinash Tiwary, Rajiv Mehta, and Divya Dutta in lead roles.
Lucky Baskhar
Directed by Venky Aturi, Lucky Baskhar hit theatres on October 31 and had a successful box office run before making its digital premiere on November 28. The Telugu film, headlined by Dulquer Salmaan, registered 7.9 million watch-hours and 3.2 million views making it to the fifth spot on Netflix’s global list of most-watched non-English films in the week ending December 15.
In its debut week on the platform, Lucky Baskhar registered 12.5 million watch-hours and 5.1 million views. Salmaan features in the film alongside Maganti Srinath, Meenaakshi Chaudhary, and Ramki in the film.
Amaran
Headlined by Sivakarthikeyan, the Tamil film Amaran, has remained on Netflix’s list of most-watched non-English films worldwide for the second consecutive week. After making it to the fourth slot in its debut week, the film has now bagged the sixth spot. It registered 2.7 million views and 7.7 million watch-hours for the week ending December 15.
Amaran had its digital premiere on December 5, five weeks after it released in theatres to wide appreciation. The film is about the real-life story of Major Mukund Varadarajan, an Indian soldier. Along with Sivakarthikeyan, Sai Pallavi, Rahul Bose and Bhuvan Arora also play important parts in the film.
