Bangsal Isolasi, directed by Adhe Dharmastriya, follows the life of a woman named Weni, who is on a quest to find out the reason behind her sister’s untimely death. Weni knew that some illicit activities were taking place inside the Ratu Adil prison that the world didn’t know about. Weni had been very close to her sister, and she was ready to go to any extent to find her killers. So, let’s find out if Weni achieves her goal by the end of Bangsal Isolasi or not.
Spoiler Alert
Why was Weni in the Ratu Adil prison?
Weni was placed in the Ratu Adil prison after she was charged with a drug-related crime. From the beginning of Bangsal Isolasi, it became very clear that Weni was hiding something, and she had certain ulterior motives that nobody knew about. Weni was sharing a room with a girl named Yanti. Yanti told Weni that they were the lucky ones, as in other cells, several prisoners were put together, and there was barely any room for all of them to sleep comfortably. Yanti looked out for Weni, and she gave her advice about how she should survive among such violent criminals. There was a woman named Bella who had a habit of picking fights, bullying other prisoners, and behaving in the most unruly and violent manner. Yanti told Weni to stay away from Bella at all costs if she didn’t want her stay in prison to become a nightmare. But Weni was the kind of person who just couldn’t keep quiet if she saw somebody being bullied or tortured unnecessarily. There were times when Weni stopped Bella from hitting a person, and Yanti, time and again, told the former that she was putting herself in danger and things wouldn’t go well for her if she kept triggering Bella. But Weni did what she felt was right, not thinking about the consequences her actions could entail. As the story unfolded, we got to know the real reason why Weni was in prison.
Weni’s sister, Ratna, had died under mysterious circumstances when she was serving time for the crime she had committed. Weni wanted to know the real reason behind her death, and so she asked Saiman, who was a prosecutor, to put her in the same prison. Now, Saiman was a resourceful man, and he could easily get Weni in the prison, but he warned her about the consequences of doing so. He told her that the prison authorities were up to something and he wouldn’t be able to save her if something unprecedented happened. But Weni was adamant, and so Saiman granted her wish. Inside the prison, there was another guard named Adit, who was put inside by Saiman to look after Weni and gather all the information about whatever was happening there. Weni met Adit, and the latter told her that she needed to go and talk to Ms. Sekar, an inmate who knew Ratna quite well, but before she could speak the truth, she was killed by two assailants. Adit also told Weni that Farhan, the prison guard, was quite loyal to the warden, Herman, and there were things they did in the isolation room that nobody knew about. Weni knew that the answer to all her questions lay inside the isolation room, though she knew that she would put her life at risk by going there.
Who killed Weni’s sister?
Weni saw a pattern in the way things transpired inside the prison. Whenever somebody messed around with Bella, the prison authorities, i.e., Herman, sent them to the isolation ward, and then suddenly they took their lives when earlier they hadn’t shown such suicidal tendencies. Weni was told that her sister had also committed suicide, but she knew that that wasn’t the truth and the prison authorities were hiding something from her. Weni went and intentionally picked a fight with Bella, and then she got what she wanted, i.e., she was put inside the isolation ward. Just days before Weni was put inside the ward, two girls named Jane and Yeti were also put there, and they, too, died under mysterious circumstances, though they tried to bribe Farhan to no avail.
The biggest revelation in Bangsal Isolasi was made when Yanti, Weni’s sweet and caring cellmate, came to meet her in prison. Weni was shocked when she realized that Yanti was the one who had killed her sister and the others and then sold their organs on the black market and made a fortune out of it. But Yanti was not the one who was running the syndicate. She was merely a pawn who was acting on the orders of people higher up the food chain. Weni fought for her life, and she didn’t let Yanti drug her. Weni killed Yanti in self-defense and escaped from the isolation chamber. Weni didn’t know who to trust and who to turn to for help. Adit tried to help her, but Herman intervened and gravely injured the poor boy after assaulting him but Adit managed to take down Farhan. Weni went to Ms. Rusdiah’s, room as she knew that if there was anybody who would genuinely try to help her, then it was her. Weni had no clue that she had walked right into the tiger’s den and that she had trusted the wrong person.
Why did Saiman want to reopen the Isolation Ward?
Ms. Rusdiah, the therapist who made every prisoner feel like she was trying to help their cause and that she wanted to put an end to all the illicit activities happening inside the prison was the mastermind who was running the organ trafficking syndicate. Herman, the jail warden, was her husband, and together, they had earned a lot of money by selling the organs of the inmates on the black market. Rusdiah drugged Weni, and she would have killed her had Adit not arrived at the right time. Weni injected Rusdiah with the same drug that she used on her victims. Rusdiah started hallucinating, and at the end of the film, we got to know that she had been put under observation in a mental asylum. Weni came out of the prison and exposed the organ trafficking ring that had taken the lives of many inmates.
In Bangsal Isolasi’s mid-credit scene, we see that Saiman, the one who had put Weni inside the prison at her request, is talking to an unknown person. He said on the phone that they had gotten rid of Herman and Rusdiah and that they could once again open the isolation ward and run the syndicate, which is now up for grabs. Now, it is possible that Saiman also had a role to play in whatever illegal activities were taking place inside the prison. At the beginning of the film we saw that he told Weni that he didn’t have a lot of knowledge about what exactly was happening inside the prison, but I believe that was a lie. I think that Saiman knew much more than what he told Weni. It is possible that he sent Weni inside the prison because he knew that she would find out the truth and expose Herman and Rusdiah. Though it is merely speculation, I believe that Saiman wanted to reap the benefits of the organ trafficking business, and it could be possible that he wanted to reopen the isolation ward for the same reason. The mysterious way in which Saiman talked to that anonymous caller at the end of the film didn’t make it seem like he had bona fide intentions. It would be interesting to see what Saiman does if the makers decide to come out with a part 2 and if it has any sort of impact on Weni’s and Adit’s lives.
