“Just read the book and show up” says Ellen Garaffa, leader of the Mystery Book Club, who joined in 2009.
The book club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Council Bluffs Public Library to discuss the book read by members the month before. Through discussion, they rate each book using the Goodreads five-star scale.
They tailor books and subgenres to current events or time of year. They read “The Inside Ring,” a political thriller by Mike Lawson, in November to go with “our own political thriller,” or the election. They’re now reading “The Twelve Days of Murder” by Andreina Cordani to match the holiday season.
“Mystery has so many exciting genres that we explore,” Garaffa said.
For aspiring bookworms setting New Year’s resolutions, the group plans to read “The Pale Blue Eye” by Louis Bayard in January for discussion on Feb. 4.

The group has grown from around 10 members in 2009 to filling library meeting rooms with around 30 members today.
The science fiction Worlds Away Book Club, the Non-Fiction Book Club, and the Lunch Bunch Book Club also meet on a reoccurring basis at the library.
