Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, urged young people to read more books to gain advanced knowledge and build human resources in Cambodia for further development.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 11th Cambodia Book Fair on December 19 at the Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre, the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, said that books, publications, and writing reflect the socio-economic development of the nation, and without books, knowledge cannot be transferred from one generation to another. Therefore, books are necessary to disseminate general knowledge, scientific and technical knowledge, and especially to disseminate culture and national literature.
The minister said that for national literature to flourish, only when people read more—not only national literature but also foreign literature—will Cambodia progress more, because famous and prosperous writers have broad knowledge.
He said that using Facebook a lot, especially when there is ChatGPT or AI, makes people no longer want to read books because they can order machines to do it instead, which is a big challenge for humanity, especially young people. Therefore, the minister encouraged young people to read more books to increase their knowledge, because reading books provides high-level knowledge
However, organising this book fair encourages writers to both write and read, showcases their works, and promotes the nation’s culture and civilisation.
