Finding the perfect Christmas gift for a woman can be tricky, especially when men miss the mark with presents that suggest they haven’t really thought it through.
It’s no surprise men are scared to buy gifts for women.
According to a survey of 3,000 women conducted by DatingAdvice, the worst Christmas gifts men can give include self-help books, cleaning supplies, and personal hygiene products.
Self-help books topped the list as the ultimate gift failure. Women said these gifts imply something is wrong with them, making it a big no-no unless their partner has explicitly asked for help.
Never buy a woman a vacuum cleaner.
Cleaning supplies or a vacuum cleaner also ranked high, as these gifts make women feel like they’re being reduced to housekeepers.
Similarly, personal hygiene products like deodorant or mouthwash are seen as an insult, implying that their partner thinks they have bad hygiene.
Other gifts to avoid include last-minute “panic gifts” from drugstores, like cheap perfumes or generic gift sets, as well as diet books and weight loss memberships, which can feel like a judgment on someone’s body.
A cookbook for beginners or a book on improving social skills can also backfire, as they may unintentionally critique her abilities or personality.
The survey revealed that the hardest part of shopping for women was finding something they don’t already own.
But men, take note—many women would prefer thoughtful, personal gifts over expensive ones. A homemade item, heartfelt letter, or cozy blanket topped the list of ideal gifts.
Women love romantic gifts
Finally, if given a gift-free Christmas, many women would prefer quality time with their partner—like a romantic getaway or a relaxing day spent together—over material presents.
