CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – It’s the busiest travel day of the holiday season for air travelers.
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport estimates that nearly 34,000 passengers traveled through the Northeast Ohio airport on Friday.
On Monday, December 23, an additional 33,000 passengers are expected to pack the airport.
In total from December 19 through January 6, 530,000 passengers are expected to travel by plane from Cleveland for Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year. That’s up over 6% from this time last year.
But travelers who spoke with 19 News seemed to take it all in stride, including a couple from Akron heading to Washington, D.C. to visit family and then it’s off to Rome, Italy for the New Year.
“Well, I didn’t know it was the busiest day, or maybe I wouldn’t have traveled, but it’s just the end of the week and it works out well,” said one traveler.
But with a visit to their airport oftentimes comes delays. In this case, airport workers say it’s due to snow predictions for Northeast Ohio and other parts of the country.
A Cleveland woman with two young children thought she made it to the airport just in time to make their flight to Atlanta. But quickly learned her holiday flight was delayed.
“We’re going to Atlanta, it’s delayed by about 2-hours. But now we’ll be sitting 2-more hours with crying kids,” she said.
AAA estimates $107-Million people will travel by car. An additional 4.47-Million will meet up with family and friends by taking a bus, train or even a cruise ship to their holiday destination.
