Cannes-winning film All We Imagine As Light, directed by Payal Kapadia, is on the top of Brack Obama’s movie recommendations for 2024. The Obama family is known for their keen eye for standout talents in entertainment. The former United States President and his wife, Michelle, are also the founders of Higher Ground Production, which has produced critically acclaimed works like the Academy Award-winning documentary American Factory. Moreover, their daughter, Malia, is a promising filmmaker.
As 2024 wraps up, Barack Obama curated a list of films that resonated with him. From India to the US and Taiwan to Denmark, the recommendations are all the films that made it to his favourites of the year.

All We Imagine As Light
All We Imagine As Light is an India-made film about three women’s lives in Mumbai, navigating their desires, relationships, and needs. Director Payal Kapadia made history in May 2024 as the first Indian filmmaker to earn a Grand Prix award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Conclave
Conclave is an American suspense thriller about the secret mission of finding a new Pope and the conspiracies that unfold along the way. It was directed by Edward Berger and stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow in lead roles.
The Piano Lesson
The Piano Lesson is a US drama that follows the lives of a family dealing with themes of family legacy and more, in deciding what to do with an heirloom, the family piano. It was directed by Malcolm Washington and stars Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, and Danielle Deadwyler.
The Promised Land
The Promised Land is a Danish film that traces the story of a soldier who explored and cultivated Denmark’s wild Jutland. The historical epic is directed by Nikolaj Arcel and stars Mads Mikkelsen and Amanda Collin.
The Seed of the Sacred Fig
This is an Iranian crime-drama film about how an investigating judge’s interpersonal relationships get strained amid political unrest in Tehran. The film was directed by Mohammad Rasoulof and stars Mahsa Rostami, Setareh Maleki, and Niousha Akhshi.
Dune: Part Two
Dune 2 is an American sci-fi about a family’s war for control over the galaxy’s most valuable asset while its heirs become troubled by visions of a dark future. The film was directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Rebecca Ferguson. The film also features India’s Tabu.
Anora
Anora is an American rom-com film about a sex worker in Brooklyn whose life takes a tumultuous turn when she impulsively marries the son of a Russian billionaire. The film is directed by Sean Baker and stars Mikey Madison in the lead role.
Dìdi
Dìdi is an American coming-of-age comedy about a Taiwanese immigrant family in California. The English-Mandarin-language film was directed by Sean Wang and stars Izaac Wang, Maheala Park, and Joan Chen among others.
Sugarcane
Sugarcane is a Canadian investigative documentary about missing children and survivors of the Canadian-Indian residential school system and traces themes of intergenerational trauma. The film was directed by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie.
A Complete Unknown
A Complete Unknown is the biopic of Bob Dylan, starring and produced by Timothée Chalamet among others. The America-made film is about the musician’s beginnings in New York, the relationships he forges in the music industry, and his journey to becoming a global stunner.
Obama also picked his 10 favourite books of 2024 and urged his social media followers to read the books during the holiday season.
