Sisters Dede and Landrea Cowart started Miscellaneous Market with the intention of growing into the name. They prioritize keeping up with the trends, curating the best combination of unique goods and packaging the perfect gift for their customers.
“It’s very much a place of love,” Dede Cowart said.
The family business began with RW Events, an entrepreneurial endeavor undertaken by Dede and Landrea’s mother, Tamuel Cowart. As a wedding and event planning business owner, she remarked frequently to her daughters that she wished she had somewhere to send her brides — a go-to spot to find the things they would often buy from Etsy.
“That’s where we kind of started the conversation. I started working for her shortly after I graduated from school,” Dede Cowart said. “Everything she put her mind to became something.”
But the sisters felt like Orlando needed more neighborhood boutiques, so they dreamed up a gift shop and called it Miscellaneous Market.
“It’s bigger than what we thought it would be,” Dede Cowart said. “I feel like Orlando showed us that they are here to support.”
According to Dede, 2024 was a good year overall for the business; they recognized the increase in the cost of goods — and the way it affected everyone — to be more intentional in how they were spending. Looking forward to 2025, she hopes to introduce local business collaborations, including some after-hours events.
“I think it’s going to be a year for reconnecting and just having fun,” she said.
As a family business, Miscellaneous Market understands the importance of community. They want to offer a fun and inspiring experience to their customers out of their love and passion for the city.
“I hope I just have brought some joy, and I hope that I continue to do so,” Dede Cowart said. “As long as they have a good time here, that’s all I could ask.”
