Every year the festive season rolls round, the same argument about what constitutes a Christmas movie arrives with it.
The age-old debate about whether Die Hard is a Christmas film or not is a tired one, so here’s a new controversial discussion to bring to the table: Is Harry Potter a Christmas movie?
Harry Potter super fans might argue describing the epic eight-film franchise as a ‘Christmas movie’ is a little reductive.

But, after all, there is a dazzling Christmas scene in almost every single one of the films.
From the first snow lightly dusting the sprawling Hogwarts grounds to a young Harry receiving his first-ever Christmas gift in the form of an ugly sweater from Molly Weasley, Christmas is a pervasive theme in each movie.
Plus, you simply cannot beat the iconic Christmas decorations in the Hogwarts Great Hall each year.
Yes
No
There is nothing better than curling up with a cup of tea or glass of wine and watching the glorious scenes of Christmas at Hogwarts to celebrate the festive season in style.
As an Australian, it is even more magical to see a wintry Christmas setting in the films.
I will say, however, the earlier films – The Philosopher’s Stone, The Chamber of Secrets and The Prisoner of Azkaban – are the best Christmassy-themed Harry Potter movies, as the instalments tend to get darker and less festive as they go on.

A lonely 20 per cent of respondents argued it was.

A popular Reddit post also posed the question about whether it is “absurd” to suggest Harry Potter might be a Christmas film.
“I have a yearly tradition of watching all the Harry Potter movies during the Christmas season, and all my friends think that it is absurd and in no way could be a ‘Christmas movie’ Does anyone agree with me?” the Harry Potter fan asked.
Fans of the series said the movies are a lot better than most corny Christmas movies on the market, while others argued watching Harry Potter during the holidays is a “great tradition” – but it doesn’t make it a Christmas film.

“My husband and I always play them on Christmas Day. We start with the first and they play in the background through the entire day. The kids love it,” one Reddit user shared.
“They aren’t primarily Xmas movies. But most if not all have a part that focuses on Xmas, so they kinda have Xmas/holiday vibes,” another wrote.
Most people seemed to agree that a film’s capacity to be a ‘Christmas movie’ is entirely up to individual preference.
One person said: “It doesn’t matter if it matters to you. You watch them yearly at Christmas? They are a Christmas movie to you. Theme or no themes.”
