Airbnb will once again implement advanced technology to prevent unauthorized parties during New Year’s Eve celebrations. The platform announced on Monday that it will block certain reservations and require customers to acknowledge the party ban, aiming to promote positive travel and stays.
The technology uses machine learning to identify and avoid bookings for entire properties that may pose a higher risk of unauthorized parties. It evaluates multiple factors, including:
- Length of the trip.
- Type of accommodation.
- Distance from the guest’s location.
- Booking dates.
If a reservation is flagged as risky, it will either be blocked or alternative accommodations will be offered to the guest through Airbnb.
“Although reality shows that problems do not usually arise, we want to contribute to reducing the risk of unauthorized parties being held,” said Sara Rodríguez, director of Public Policy for Spain at Airbnb.
Global Implementation
The technology will be activated in the final days of the year and on New Year’s Eve across various countries and regions, including:
- Spain
- The United Kingdom
- France
- The United States
- Puerto Rico
- Canada
- Australia
- New Zealand
Airbnb first introduced these restrictions on New Year’s Eve in 2020. Since then, the platform has reported an 81% decrease in incidents during this period in Spain.
Results in Spain
Last year, Airbnb prevented approximately 4,500 guests in Spain from booking or redirected them to alternative accommodations for New Year’s Eve. Specific figures included:
- 550 guests in Madrid.
- 500 guests in Barcelona.
- 170 guests in Valencia.
- 80+ guests in Seville.
Airbnb’s proactive measures underscore its commitment to ensuring safe and enjoyable stays while minimizing disruptions caused by unauthorized events.
