There are plenty of walklable cities in the UK, but an underrated gem has been named the best for 2025.
Liverpool came in 8th on a study by Scenic Cruises for the most feel-good places to visit, and was voted the most walkable out of all of them.
In partnership with Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, Scenic Cruises analysed five key factors shown to increase dopamine levels during travel, including hours of sunshine, air quality, green spaces, cuisine, and walkability.
Liverpool was ruled the most walkable city in the study by utilising several factors such as as the average walking distance from the port to several popular tourist attractions, also factoring in the elevation changes.
Investments in urban development have further enhanced walkability, creating inviting public spaces and improving infrastructure for pedestrians, who also have excellent public transport options at their disposal.
Liverpool boasts numerous museums, galleries, and historic sites, such as the Albert Dock and the Beatles Story, all conveniently located close to each other.
There’s also the Cavern Club, where The Beatles formed their musical identity. Today, this bar still hosts live bands as well as showcasing the legacy of The Beatles.
Visitors to the bar describe it as “the best night out ever.”
“What an amazing night, only £5 to get in and well worth the money,” wrote one person in a Tripadvisor review.
“A fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff and great music. It’s like a mini museum with lots of memorabilia and has a bar, lots of areas to sit in and air con! We went on a Sunday night and saw The Shakers, they are Sunday regulars and are amazing and I’d recommend going to see them if you’re lucky enough to be there on Sunday. After they finished there was another great group on and the music continued into the night.”
Commenting on the study, Dr. Gurpreet Kaur said: “Sunshine exposure boosts dopamine levels naturally, while quality cuisine offers essential nutrients and enjoyment.
“Walking reduces cortisol, helping to regulate dopamine, and clean air enhances brain function. Studies have also shown that green spaces encourage mindfulness, which helps to increase dopamine. Together, these elements create destinations that refresh and elevate mood.”
