Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election and is all but expected to leave Washington D.C. later this month when President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath.
But that didn’t stop her from taking a shot at the incoming 47th president on the fourth anniversary of the violent riot at the Capitol.
Harris, speaking in a video she posted on social media, said Monday she’s prepared to certify the 2024 presidential election four years after a mob stormed the building chanting for then-Vice President Mike Pence to be hung.
“The peaceful transfer of power is one of the most fundamental principles of American democracy. As much as any other principle, it is what distinguishes our system of government from monarchy or tyranny,” Harris said in the video.
“Today at the United States Capitol, I will perform my constitutional duty as Vice President of the United States to certify the results of the 2024 election,” she said. “As we have seen, our democracy can be fragile.”
The latter was a knock against Trump for refusing to accept the results of the 2020 election.
Harris said during the campaign that she believed that Trump “is a fascist” after his longest-serving chief of staff said the former president praised Adolf Hitler while in office and put personal loyalty above the Constitution. She seized on comments by former chief of staff John Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general, about his former boss in interviews with The New York Times and The Atlantic published a month before the election that warned the Republican nominee met the definition of a fascist and that Trump, while in office, suggested that the Nazi leader “did some good things.”
Four years ago, thousands of rioters stormed the Capitol as Congress worked to certify the election results.
Some of the 1,250 defendants convicted of crimes after Jan. 6 called for the deaths of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Pence, who was Trump’s vice president, as the mob violently overran police and breached the building. Some carried weapons, zip ties, chemical irritants and Confederate flags as they ransacked the Capitol and hunted for lawmakers. They sought to stop the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s win over Trump, echoing the Republican incumbent’s false claims that the election was stolen.
