SENATORS have sparked outrage online for referring to Kamala Harris as “Madam President” during the Electoral College count.
Members of the US Senate convened on the House floor to formally cement President-elect Donald Trump‘s Election Day victory.
There were no objections while Harris, in her capacity as president of the Senate, certified her own election defeat to Trump.
In doing so, she became only the third vice president in American history to certify their defeat after Richard Nixon in 1961 and Al Gore in 2001.
The House chamber erupted in applause when Harris said President-elect Trump secured 312 Electoral College votes.
House Speaker Mike Johnson joined his fellow House Republicans in standing up from their seats to celebrate the certification of the presidential election.

On the other side, Democrats stood up and cheered for the vice president when she confirmed her campaign received 226 votes.
“This announcement of the state of the vote by the president of the Senate shall be deemed a sufficient declaration of the persons elected president and vice president of the United States,” Harris said, reaffirming the vote.
But as the count began, X users fumed when the four tellers tasked with confirming each state’s electoral certificates addressed Harris as “Madam President.”
One by one, the tellers, Wisconsin Republican Senator Bryan Steil, New York Republican Joe Morelle, Nebraska Republican Deb Fischer, and Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar, referred to Harris the same way.
“Why are they addressing Harris as, Madam President? Last I heard she was still just the useless VP!” one person blasted on X.
A second asked, “Why are they referring to Kamala as ‘Madam President’? Has there been a transfer of power?”
“What is this Madam President BS???” another seethed.
“Kamala Harris will be addressed as Madam President 50 times today. And then never again,” a fourth said.
The US Constitution bestows the vice president the power of the president of the Senate – a role that will be passed on to JD Vance when he’s sworn in on January 20.
Vance will also be referred to as Mr. President when serving in the role.
Kamala Harris’ statement about the Electoral College certification
“The peaceful transfer of power is one of the most fundamental principles of American democracy. As much as any other principle, it is what distinguishes our system of government from monarchy or tyranny.
“Today, at the United States Capitol, I will perform my constitutional duty as Vice President to certify the results of the 2024 election. This duty is a sacred obligation — one I will uphold guided by love of country, loyalty to our Constitution, and unwavering faith in the American people.
“As we have seen, our democracy can be fragile, and it is up to then each one of us to stand up for our most cherished principles and to make sure that in America, our government always remains of the people, by the people, and for the people.
“May God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.”
‘BIG MOMENT’
Hours before Harris certified the election vote, Trump hailed it as a “big moment in history.”
“Congress certifies our great election victory today – a big moment in history. MAGA!” the president-elect, 78, wrote in all caps on a Truth Social post.
The certification came on the fourth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, riots, when supporters of then-President Trump stormed the US Capitol in an effort to stop the results of the 2020 election.

Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, said he had “vivid” memories of the insurrection four years ago as he sat on the House floor and watched his fellow Congress members certify Trump’s win.
Schiff told CNN he could not help “look at different parts of the House floor and say, ‘Ok, that’s where I was standing when the attack began. That’s where I got my gas mask from under the seat. That’s where I heard people shouting in the gallery.'”
