ALBANY, Ga. – Imagine a world where every child begins their educational journey with a treasure trove of stories, adventures, and knowledge.
The “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten,” is turning this vision into a reality. This initiative is a nationwide program and caregivers to read at least 1,000 books to their children from birth until they begin Kindergarten.
According to the National Literacy Institute, approximately 40% of students across the nation cannot read at a basic level. 1000 books before Kindergarten emphasizes that reading to infants is valuable as when students read themselves, providing prior experience before they step into a classroom.
Participants can track their reading electronically, and many libraries, including the Dougherty County Public Library here in Albany, offer incentives for achieving specific milestones.
This program aims to address literacy challenges by fostering early literacy skills to better prepare children for academic success.
