Guwahati, Jan 11: The Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Friday approved a series of strategic initiatives aimed at driving economic growth and addressing key developmental challenges across several sectors.
A significant decision was the classification of oil palms as a cash crop, expected to enhance the state’s agricultural economy. The Cabinet also approved guidelines for setting up industrial estates to encourage the growth of wood-based industries.
In the dairy sector, a subsidy of Rs 5 per litre was sanctioned for dairy farmers selling their products through cooperative societies. Additionally, the Cabinet approved the establishment of new milk processing plants in Jorhat and Dibrugarh, with plans for additional plants in Dhemaji and Cachar.
To address urban challenges such as flooding, the Cabinet approved the restructuring of the Assam Directorate of Town and Country Planning to better meet the state’s urban needs.
The Cabinet also endorsed initiatives to promote tea tourism at Dibrugarh’s Lepetkata tea estate and Sonitpur’s Durrung tea estate. In a move to support small vendors, the Cabinet exempted vegetable and betel sellers from paying fees to leaseholders, easing their financial burden.
