Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss are beginning a new year with their book club.
The friends founded Belletrist, an online reading community, in 2017, and have chosen over 70 books across genres to share with readers since. Belletrist chooses a new book to read every month, and has since expanded to offer club members the opportunity to have books delivered to their doorsteps, through a partnership with Tertulia.
Roberts told PEOPLE in a Nov. 2024 email interview that when it comes to selecting books for the club, “there is no formula.”
“It’s genuinely whatever moves us,” she said. “But I will say this … we try to pick books that we read and then need to talk about. That’s what makes a good Belletrist pick. You read it and you’re like: I gotta talk to someone about this — now!”

“Our aim has always been to deepen the connection between readers and books, and help facilitate conversation with community members,” Preiss said in a statement. “We’re excited about having more authors engage with our community on a forward basis.”

‘The Motherload: Episodes from the Brink of Motherhood’ by Sarah Hoover
This candid memoir, out Jan. 14, follows the author’s experience with postpartum depression and how she learned to make peace with the complicated feelings motherhood can bring.
“[Hoover] turns the ecstatic narrative women have been fed — one of immediate connection to your child followed by a joyful path of maternal discovery — on its head,” Belletrist wrote on Instagram.
