The former presidents, as well as President Joe Biden, gathered on Thursday to pay their respects at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral. The 39th president of the United States died on December 29 at the age of 100. There was plenty of chatter surrounding the events, especially regarding how all of the presidents gathered together, namely former President Barack Obama and former and future President Donald Trump. One Republican senator offered his take on what Obama may have been trying to achieve.
As Townhall has been covering, there was plenty of drama at the funeral, with Biden appearing to use Carter’s death to insult Trump with rants about “decency,” just as he did when news first came out about the former president’s death. In a particularly ridiculous display, at a funeral for a supposedly devout Christian president held at the National Cathedral, which also included reciting the Lord’s Prayer, the song “Imagine” by John Lennon was performed.
Regarding interactions between Obama and Trump, Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) offered during an appearance of “The Benny Show” with Benny Johnson that Obama had to “kiss the ring.”
Mullin had been asked to offer speculation about the interactions right when he joined, as he also talked about how Trump had met with Republican senators earlier that week, was “having a lot of fun” and reflected “a redemption story” and “the greatest political comeback of all times.”
“What you see right there,” Mullin offered, as the screen showed Obama laughing while speaking to Trump, “is Barack Obama realizing it and realizing that he kinda probably should kiss the ring because President Trump is the most popular man in the world and probably the most popular man in our lifetime around the world, and everybody recognizes that now, and the president, President Trump, is sitting in a good spot and he’s very relaxed.”

Mullin also stressed how “very relaxed” Trump is and “willing to let put bygones behind him and move forward.” This especially since November 6, with the senator having seen a different side of him.

Shortly before speaking with Mullin, Johnson offered that Trump being at the funeral and his interactions were “an opportunity for like the king, in old times, to show mercy to his subjects,” which he stressed is “great” and “a beautiful practice in living out your values.”
Mullin is certainly on to something. The Obamas endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace Biden in the 2024 election, and Obama as well as former staffers of his were particularly key in forcing Biden out. There were even reports of threats about invoking the 25th Amendment if Biden wouldn’t drop out on his own.
Beyond the endorsement, the Obamas also spoke at the DNC in August, on a separate night from Biden, who was treated particularly abominably by his own party that tossed him aside, as his speaking slot was delayed so that he was out of the primetime slot and rushed. It’s also particularly noteworthy that former First Lady Michelle Obama didn’t even mention Biden during her speech.
With Harris as the replacement nominee, and with it looking very much during the race that she wasn’t getting the support she desperately needed from key groups, the Obamas were trotted out to try to bully and gaslight demographics like young black men into voting for Harris.
During another funeral where some of the former presidents and Biden were gathered to pay their respects to Ethel Kennedy last October, Obama could be seen speaking with his former vice president, where Biden certainly had some thoughts about Harris replacing him. Obama was also dispirited about Harris’ chances, and to think, he himself played such a significant role.
As we know now, after the election, with Trump having trounced Harris, Biden still claims he could have won, even though he doesn’t know if he would have had the vigor to serve another four years.
The Obamas gambled when it comes to the 2024 election, and they lost, badly. So, yes, Obama very much likely has to kiss the ring.
I found the full exchange between Obama and Biden at Ethel Kennedy’s funeral — a VERY tense conversation 20 days out from the election.
If anyone can read lips, please let me know what they’re saying. It’s probably good. pic.twitter.com/BIZTL61SHT
