The British High Commission in Jamaica has confirmed that Jamaican nationals will not be impacted by the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) newly introduced Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement.
Jamaicans will still need a visa to enter the UK.
The clarification comes amid public concern and media reports about the UK’s new travel rule, which took effect on January 8, 2025. The ETA applies exclusively to nationals of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the UK.
British High Commissioner to Jamaica, Juditunderscored that the policy does not affect Jamaican travellers. “The introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is an important step in enhancing the UK’s border security and managing travel more efficiently. However, it is important to note that the new ETA policy applies only to nationals of visa-exempt countries. Jamaicans will continue to require a visa for travel to the UK,” Slater stated.
The High Commissioner also urged Jamaicans to rely on official sources for accurate information regarding travel requirements. “We encourage all Jamaican nationals to refer to the official UK government website at www.gov.uk for full details on visa application procedures,” she added.
The ETA system, part of the UK’s broader border management strategy, allows for digital pre-screening of travelers from visa-exempt countries. It aims to streamline travel while maintaining robust security measures.
The British High Commission in Jamaica reaffirmed its commitment to clear and timely communication regarding UK immigration policies. It encouraged Jamaicans to reach out for assistance or visit the official UK government website for further guidance.
