A sleeper hit has just been recognised as a standout from last years cinematic offerings.
The film rating platform Letterboxd has released their ‘Year in Review 2024’, crowning the surprisingly low-key Hundreds of Beavers as the top-rated comedy of the year.
Set against a 19th-century backdrop, the plot weaves a tale of a booze-hawking applejack salesman who embarks on a quest to transform from a nobody into North Americas premier fur trapper by outsmarting legions of beavers.
Movie buffs have flocked to the site, with the quirky comedy drawing views from an astounding 99,000 members and earning the thumbs up from 47,000 enthusiasts, reports the Mirror.
One avid viewer penned on the website: “My favourite comedy movie of all time. While watching it I already felt the need to rewatch scenes I just saw. Extremely impressive visual comedy with hundreds of clever ideas. I am so glad this exists!”
Meanwhile, another admirer declared: “A masterpiece. So many f****** beavers. More genius gags than I’ve seen in the entire past decade of movies. Also secretly the best video game movie (not based on a video game) ever?”
Infused with the spirit of slapstick reminiscent of 1920s and 1930s comedy legends, Hundreds of Beavers is the brainchild of writer and director Mike Cheslik. The flick first debuted at Fantastic Fest in September 2022 before making its way to video-on-demand audiences in April 2024.
The film boasts an impressive cast, including Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, Olivia Graves, Wes Tank, Doug Mancheski, and Luis Rico in key roles.
It has garnered numerous accolades, such as Best Director for Mike at the Phoenix Film Festival and Best Comedy Film from the St. Louis Film Critics Association.
This slapstick comedy has earned a 7.7 rating on IMDb based on 9,000 reviews, as well as a 97% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 81% Popcornmeter rating.
Enthusiastic fans have hailed it as a “genuine masterpiece”, while another Rotten Tomatoes user proclaimed it “the funniest film of 2024, hands down”. One fan raved: “Hundreds of Beavers, meanwhile, is a shining beacon of how to tip your hat to yesteryear while making something incredibly fresh.”
Another added: “Hundreds of Beavers is an absolute gem and we are lucky to experience it.”
Hundreds of Beavers is available to rent or buy on Google Play and can also be streamed via Shudder
