One of Carmel’s longstanding businesses is closing soon.
The Carmel Music Center, which has operated since 1987, will close by the end of February, according to a Facebook post from owner David Rennard.
“With passion and enthusiastic endurance, Carmel Music Center thrived for almost 40 years, often through tough business environments, as well as the challenges of the COVID pandemic,” Rennard wrote in the post. “I am pleased to say that I am going out on my terms and my schedule, not because I have to, but because it is time for me to enjoy some things I have sacrificed over the decades.”
The music center is located on Main Street in the Carmel Arts & Design District. There has been a music store operating out of the building since the 1960s, Rennard said in the Facebook post.
“While contemplating the exit for a while now, a few sincere attempts were made to have someone else continue here as a music store,” he wrote in the post. “That was always my preference. Unfortunately, due to economic obstacles, the stars could not align and I finally decided to sell the building to a nice family-owned business that I feel will be a good fit for the Arts & Design District.”
Hamilton County property records show that in late November, ownership of the property was transferred to Christian and Mary Faith Felder. The couple operates Chatham Home, a home goods store, near Mass Ave. in downtown Indianapolis.

In the meantime, the music store is liquidating inventory with deals for customers, according to Rennard’s Facebook post.
“I am forever grateful to the customers who have always made conscious attempts to purchase from local small businesses like Carmel Music Center,” Rennard wrote in the post. “Last and most importantly, I want to say how grateful I am to my employees and music instructors, whom I’ve always felt are the best in the business.”
