Haiti – South : Towards a sustainable management model for tourist sites

On January 9, 2025, the Ministry of Tourism held a workshop to present a sustainable management framework for tourist sites in the South, marking a key step in promoting Haiti’s natural and cultural heritage. This workshop was attended by representatives of the Technical Execution Unit (UTE), the Interministerial and Territorial Planning Committee (CIAT) and the Haitian Tourist Association (ATH).
John Herrick Dessources, Minister of Tourism, who spoke at the opening of this workshop, called for a collective commitment to better position Haiti as a tourist destination.
Project leaders presented initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting historical and natural sites. Christine Stephenson, Project Coordinator who became head of CIAT, stressed that Haiti has some of the richest and most diverse sites in the Caribbean, a potential that must be fully exploited.
For her part, Ginette Chérubin advocated for concrete strategies to ensure sustainable development and effective management of the sites.
Concrete actions are already in place, such as the installation of a sanitary block in Port-Salut near the Touyac Waterfall and the promotion of the Grotte Marie-Jeanne and Fort Douet, integrating an agro-ecological approach.
The Ministry of Tourism reaffirms its leadership role in structuring a dynamic tourism sector, by mobilizing all stakeholders to make Haiti a rich and competitive destination. This approach is aligned with a vision of preserving heritage while strengthening the attractiveness of the country.
