BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) – It’s that time of year. More than 800 Girl Scouts from all over Central Illinois are preparing to sell cookies.
Saturday was one of the biggest events of the year for Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, which oversees scouts in Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, and beyond.
The annual cookie rally gives Girl Scouts a chance to practice knocking on doors, talking to customers, and managing inventory. They also got a chance to taste the cookies they will be selling.
Leaders hope the business skills will stick with the girls into adulthood.
“We want girls to grow up to be confident and to have wonderful careers, and perhaps to be a businesswoman someday. This program helps with financial literacy as well, so our girls are really excited about it,” said Jennifer Sedbrook, CEO of Girls Scouts of Central Illinois.
Girl Scouts will be selling six different kinds of cookies starting Feb. 7.
All the money each troop gets from sales stays local, and the scouts can use it on anything from membership fees to saving up for an international trip.
