College football fans reckon they spotted a ‘spooky’ coincidence after the Notre Dame Fighting Irish booked their place in the College Football Playoff National Championship game.
Marcus Freeman’s side defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions 27-24 in the Orange Bowl to advance to the National Championship, setting up a clash with Ohio State, who beat the Texas Longhorns 28-14 on Friday night. It will be the first time Notre Dame has been in the National Championship game since the BCS days, when they were handily beaten by the Alabama Crimson Tide 42-14 back in 2013.
However, they could be set to win it all next week when they take on the Buckeyes after fans spotted a strange coincidence from the 1993 biographical film Rudy. The film is an account of Daniel ‘Rudy’ Ruettiger’s life, following how he went through hardship to make it onto the field for Notre Dame back in 1975.
Following the win over Penn State, an eagle eyed College Football fan posted a snap from the film in which the names Riley, Jeter and Mitch, were all written on a blackboard.
And coincidentally, it was quarterback Riley Leonard who scrambled for a touchdown and threw the game tying score to Jaden Greathouse late in the fourth quarter. Even more spookily, it was Mitch Jeter who kicked the game winning field goal against Penn State to send the Fighting Irish to Atlanta for the National Championship.
Taking to X, the fan wrote: “Something caught my eye rewatching Rudy…Is it Destiny?” posting a photo of the blackboard. “Then we’re winning the national championship. That’s insane. Meant to be,” wrote on fan in response. A second added: “This is like a Simpsons prediction episode.”
A third pointed out the names on the blackboard were actually the names of real players who played for the USC Trojans, writing: “There were real players on the 1974 USC Trojans Defense…Art Riley, Gary Jeter, Dale Mitchell.”
A fourth said: “If I watch the movie again and this isn’t real I’m gonna end up hating the movie.” And a fifth said: “And the day they played penn state as last home game Rudy was filed at the half in the south end zone in 1992! Destiny.”
Notre Dame will now face off against the Buckeyes in Atlanta at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on January 20, with the Fighting Irish looking to claim their first National Championship title since 1988.
