ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Travel troubles continued at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday.
Airport crews have been working around the clock to clear runways of ice, snow, and sleet.
Yet flight delays and cancellations continued to mount.
As of 9:30 p.m., 360 flights in and out of ATL were canceled while 915 flights were delayed.
More than 1,500 flights were canceled Friday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport due to the winter storm. About 1,100 of those were from Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines.
On Saturday morning, long lines spilled into terminals at the world’s busiest airport. Several people waiting to go through the main security checkpoint said they had stood in line for at least two hours to get through.
Chinedu Anaba and his wife flew in from Paris, hoping to catch a connecting flight home to Washington, D.C.
“We sat on our plane for four and they finally let us out around midnight,” he said. “We got out, our flight was canceled and all the gate agents were gone.”
Anaba and his wife were back in the airport, trying to make it home.
“Got delayed, got delayed, got delayed,” he said. “Now, we have to go on another flight that won’t leave till tomorrow. It’s just crazy.”
Courtney Darnell flew in from Bozeman, Montana.
“We were supposed to head home to Panama City Beach and the second leg of our flight got canceled,” she said.
Rather than relying on her airlines, Darnell and her husband opted for a five-hour drive in the dark back home.
“We figured it would just be easier to rent a car and drive home,” she said. “Instead of coming back tomorrow and facing the insane security lines.”
Back inside the airport, patience was wearing thin for Anaba.
“We just want to get home,” he concluded. “I mean, my wife, we just want to get home.”
As airport operations ramp up following Friday’s storm, Delta is urging customers traveling out of Hartsfield-Jackson to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled departure. The airline is also advising passengers to pack their patience and prepare for longer-than-usual security wait times.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport officials say “higher than expected volume could lead to a busy Sunday morning.”
