Marcus Webb, 35, co-founder & CEO, Goldenseal Cleaning Company
Marcus Webb has a team of nine that generates more than a half-million dollars in annual revenue by providing cleaning services to East Tennessee schools. He co-founded Goldenseal Cleaning Company in 2018 and became one of Knoxville’s first specialized high school football postgame cleaning companies.
Webb is committed to addressing the local workforce shortage, and he is a donor to several youth sports programs.
When you reflect on your career so far, which achievement stands out most?
The achievement that stands out the most is still being in business after six years and having the ability to hire my own kids and nephews.
What is the greatest professional obstacle you’ve had to overcome and how did you overcome it?
My greatest professional obstacle was trying to gain customers in an oversaturated market dominated by franchise cleaning companies. I overcame this obstacle by providing a niche solution-based cleaning service.
What will you focus on in 2025?
The focus in 2025 is expansion!
What is your biggest professional dream?
My biggest professional dream is passing my business down to my three boys and three nephews.
What mistake did you learn the most from?
Being too nice.
What motivates you?
My family.
What is the most overrated piece of business advice you’ve heard?
The most overrated advice I have heard is “follow your passion”.
What trait do you most want in a co-worker?
Reliability and consistency.
What about Knoxville would you like to improve?
I would like to see Knoxville improve racial equality, be more progressive and collaborative with Black entrepreneurs and creatives.
What don’t people know about you?
People don’t know my success isn’t about me at all. My success is the result of my mom not giving up on me. My dad sharing all his business insight. My sister sending me inspirational texts. My brother having the idea to start the cleaning business. And Takia Owens for not letting me quit when times got hard.
