PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. (WLOX) – Several books are tucked away on shelves at Pass Christian Books, a bookstore located right off Highway 90 mirroring the Mississippi Sound.
“We started out very small, and it seemed to catch on and grow,” explained Scott Naugle. “I’ve learned a lot along the way.”
For nearly 24 years, Naugle has been a co-owner of Pass Christian Books, watching it grow beyond measure.
“We’ve been lucky and it has grown. Often, people will bring up to me, ‘My gosh, people are reading digital devices.’ Wonderful. The more people read, the better. I’ve never heard anybody say at the end of their life, ‘I’ve read too many books.’”
After Hurricane Katrina, Naugle and his co-owner built the current store from the ground up and have been there ever since. Since then, the goal has been to keep growing but never lose tradition, as the store continues to add to its book collection. It has also added a coffee shop.
While some may believe working in a bookstore is a walk in the park, Naugle says that couldn’t be further from the truth. However, it’s work well worthwhile.
“The books come in pallets off the trucks. Books are heavy. We don’t have a forklift, but I often think we should get one because the books come to a facility that we rent a couple hundred of feet away from here. All those books have to be entered into the system and put on the shelf. The job is very physical.”
For Naugle, reading is an escape, and he will always strive to create a lasting experience at Pass Christian Books just for that reason.
Pass Christian Books can be found at 300 East Scenic Drive. They can also be found on Facebook.
