Cyprus will be technically ready to join the Schengen area within 2025, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides told a conference organized last Friday by Hermes Airports in Nicosia, titled “Transforming Cyprus into a Year-Round Destination.” It discussed developments in Cyprus’ tourism industry and the need to focus on new markets and year-round growth strategies.
The event was held under the auspices of Christodoulides, who, during a discussion with Kathimerini English Edition Editor in Chief Tom Ellis, also noted that the US and India are crucial new markets for Cyprus, as the country aims to recover from losses inflicted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“In April, I will be in the US, visiting three states exclusively to attract investment and tourism from the US,” he said, adding that visitors from the US spend nearly twice as much as Europeans. Furthermore, the republic has strengthened the High Commission in India to improve its engagement with the market, he added.
On expanding into new tourism markets, the president mentioned that Cyprus is opening embassies in Kazakhstan and Armenia and highlighted Poland’s growth as the second-largest market for Cyprus after the UK, a significant rise from a decade ago.
