MATTOON — The Denny’s restaurant in Mattoon has closed after just short of nine years in business.
A note posted on the front door of this Denny’s location, 224 Richmond Ave. East, stated, “We are closed. Thanks for all the support for the last eight years. We can’t stay in business. Thank you, David Behrends.” The note was still on the door Sunday afternoon but did not specify when the restaurant closed.
Behrends, who owns the Denny’s in Vandalia, opened the Mattoon location on May 22, 2016 , after extensively renovating this building about a block west of the Cross County Mall. The building originally had been the location of a Ponderosa Steakhouse and later housed a No. 1 Buffet Chinse restaurant.
The JG-TC has reached out to Behrends for comment. The Indianapolis Star and other news outlets reported last fall that the Denny’s company announced plans to close 50 locations in late 2024 and 100 more in 2025, but it’s unclear if this decision is connected to the Mattoon closure.
