Netflix viewers have been urged to check out a ‘hidden gem’ horror film that boasts ‘Scream vibes’ and an ‘unexpected twist’ ending.
The cult classic, Urban Legend, is now available on the streaming platform. Originally released in 1998, it followed the success of the original Scream movie in 1996.
While it shared many elements including premise and style, many fans regard it as one of the superior titles inspired by the now classic franchises. The film revolves around a series of murders occurring in and around a university campus, leading student Natalie to suspect that each death is inspired by various urban legends, which appear to be coming true due to a sinister killer.
Many aspects of the horror film are now a nostalgic nod to the 1990s, including the cast list. Among the now familiar faces appearing in the title include a young Michael Rosenbaum who would later play Lex Luthor in the series Smallville, reports Surrey Live.
Joining him are a young Joshua Jackson of Dawson’s Creek fame, as well as Tara Reid and Jared Leto. There’s even a cameo from horror icon Robert Englund, known for his role as Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.
While Urban Legend didn’t impress critics at the time, it has since earned a soft spot among many fans years later. Some dub it a ‘hidden gem’, while others hail it as now ‘iconic’.
One fan took to the internet to express their views, asserting: “It’s a good slasher thriller movie. I know it gives the vibes of Scream because it is also a teen slasher but I will say I like this movie better than the Scream franchise.”
Another chimed in with praise: “Great movie to watch with your friends! Fast-paced with twists and turns and some great cameos from horror legends like Robert Englund and Brad Dourif. It’s not too gory, but it is violent and suspenseful! If you want serious, disturbing horror this isn’t it. But if you want some fun 90s horror this has it all. Where else will you find Joshua Jackson playing a d*****y prankster with bleached blonde hair or Tara Reid playing a radio DJ.”
The film’s central murder mystery received accolades from several viewers, with one commenting: “Unexpected twist ending! One of the best slashers of the 90s. This movie twist makes it fun to try and guess which legends will be portrayed and which character will be unfortunate enough to succumb to it.”
