An adored family business that’s been in operation for over half a century in a suburb of Sligo town has announced it will serve its last customers this week.
Murrays Spar in Ballydoogan is distinctive for its unique storefront and the shop’s owners, Jerry and Marie Murray, who are pillars of the local community.
The couple opened the corner shop in 1973 and their three children all helped out working in the shop during the summer holidays when they were growing up.
The couple will retire and are set to serve their last customers on Friday 17 January. Locals in the area will have their last chance to try Murrays’ popular deli.
Marie told the Sligo Champion: “Our staff have been very good to us and the people in the area have been very good as well and we appreciate that.”
“We thank our loyal staff, past and present, and wish them well in the future. As we close the doors, we do so with gratitude to each and every one of you who has come through those doors since we first opened, be it as a customer, staff member or supplier.”
One longtime resident of the area shared fond memories of the shop online, writing:
“Best wishes to Gerry and Marie and family on their well-deserved retirement, and heartfelt thanks for serving the community with such warmth and dedication since 1973.”
“I still remember, as a young lad, the day they took over from the previous owners, the Oldfields. Murray’s has truly been a pillar of the community for all these years, and their presence will be greatly missed.”
“I’m wishing them all the very best in this next chapter of their lives!”
The business and the Murray family have been strong supporters of their local GAA club, St Mary’s GAA, which is located just a few hundred metres down from the corner that the shop sits on.
