Netflix enthusiasts are over the moon after uncovering what they consider ‘one of the best animated films in years’ on the platform. It comes with a star-studded voice cast and a highly commendable Rotten Tomatoes score.
The film in question is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which forms part of the beloved Shrek universe and acts as a follow-up to the 2011 spin-off Puss in Boots. However, this latest offering has surpassed its predecessor, garnering phenomenal acclaim from both professional reviewers and audiences.
Released in 2022, the film centres around the adventures of Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas), who finds out he has burned through eight of his lives and has just one left. Upon hearing about a Wishing Star with the power to grant him more lives, and with the threat of death looming, he sets out to find it.
It boasts an impressive 95 per cent approval rate from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 94 per cent audience score. Meanwhile the stellar cast includes Florence Pugh as Goldilocks, Olivia Colman as Mama Bear, and Salma Hayek voicing the character of Kitty Softpaws, the romantic interest for Puss in Boots.

The official Netflix synopsis states: “When his legendary feats bring his nine lives down to one, Puss in Boots sets out to find a magical Wishing Star in his most daring adventure yet.”
Audiences have admitted to having lowered their expectations prior to watching, only to be pleasantly surprised by the film’s touching narrative and comedic brilliance, reports Surrey Live.
One film enthusiast gave the movie a five-star rating, stating: “I never would have imagined that a sequel to an 11-year-old Shrek spin-off would end up being one of the best animated films I’ve seen in years, but somehow here we are… Puss in Boots The Last Wish is a pleasant surprise in just about every way, bringing us an exciting new adventure for everyone’s favourite sword-wielding kitty cat!”

Another viewer enthused: “As someone who is both a cat owner and mega fan of DreamWorks’ legendary Shrek franchise, all I can say is that the dapper feline’s solo escapade is one of the most delightful movies I ever had the pleasure of watching.”
