Trout anglers have a new resource to help hone their skills and put more fish into their creels.
Tim Cammisa, of rural Butler County, has penned his second book, “Tying Euro Nymphs and Other Competition Favorites,” which follows the award-winning “Fly Tying for Everyone,” that was released in 2021.
Published by Stackpole Books, Cammisa’s new book was released Tuesday. In the latest book, the Seneca Valley sixth-grade social studies and science teacher delves into the fly patterns of the world’s leading fly fishermen.
“It seems like everyone is gravitating towards this style where it’s kind of longer rods – somewhere between a 10- or an 11-foot fly rod, really light line, very light leaders, fine tippets and smaller flies,” Cammisa said. “It’s a comprehensive look at what’s being used today.”
Euro-nymphing is the use of lighter sub-surface set ups that yield less drag and resistance, and is what the world’s top competition fly-fishing teams are using, he explained. Cammisa interviewed over 30 of the top fly fishers and fly tiers in Czechia, Poland, Spain, France and the United States of America, and said that the techniques may easily be used by beginners.
“It’s a more productive and effective style, so I think for people who are also interested in getting into fly fishing and wanting to jumping into a very effective style, this is the one,” Cammisa said.
The new work highlights 15 patterns with exceptional macro-photography of the top patterns currently being used by the world’s best fly fishers. There are tying options for each one, plus notes on how to use them.
“The book was originally going to be about the nymphs – the sub-surface flies,“ Cammisa said, “but then I realized many of these anglers are using streamers, and they’re using dry flies.”
Thus, there are chapters on each, and also basic ones that imitate worms and eggs.
“This is like learning another style of fly fishing,” Cammisa said. “It covers a variety of situations, especially for trout. It’s a very effective technique for catching fish in our home state.
“I really put a big emphasis on fishing with the patterns, because when you’re talking to the world’s best anglers, sure we’re talking about flies, but it’s really about catching fish,” Cammisa said. “There’s a strong push on how to use that fly. What’s the best water type to use it in? When would you select one color over another? Those types of things.”
The force behind the resource “Trout and Feather,” Cammisa began sharing his knowledge after guiding fishing trips to Iceland, Europe and Alaska. He used his skills as a teacher to produce educational fly-tying and fly-fishing videos for YouTube before graduating to presentations nationwide and then taking on a book project.
“The intent is to help lessen the learning curve for both fly fishing and fly tying,” Cammisa said.
“Tying Euro Nymphs and Other Competition Favorites” gives readers a peek into the world of today’s top anglers.
“You’re not just getting a peek into that world,” Cammisa said. “I broke it apart into bite-sized pieces so you can actually be a part of that world, and say ‘Alright, this is what they’re doing and if I follow these steps, I’ll be doing that as well.’ I made it so it’s very broken down for that recreational angler, too.”
