Tourists rescued from car roofs

Last night, at around 4 am, rescue teams in Borgarfjörður were called out due to reports of tourists in trouble at Kattarhryggur, on their way up to Holtavörðuheiði.

A Landsbjörg Accident Prevention Association statement says that a culvert under the road had become blocked, causing a large section of the road to flood. Tourists in two cars had fallen into the water and managed to get out of the cars and onto their roofs, but they were almost submerged in the water when rescue teams arrived.

There was so much water on the road that a rescuer in a safety line had to swim to one of the cars, as two tourists were on its roof and had nowhere to go. One tourist had managed to get out of the other car on his own.

The people from the second car were successfully rescued, and by 5:30 am this morning all three had been taken to an ambulance for treatment.

Rescue workers also illuminated the area well to ensure that no one else was there and caught objects that had floated from the cars.

Subsequently, Holtavörðuheiði was closed due to rising water.

Holtavörðuheiði is now open

The road through Holtavörðuheiði was reopened after 10 this morning, but it was closed last night due to heavy flooding and several traffic accidents on the heath.

The Icelandic Road Administration’s website,

umferdin.is

, states that the road is closed over Ferjukotssíki in Borgarfjörður where the bridge has been damaged by rising water.

The Icelandic Road Administration draws attention to the fact that after significant temperature changes in recent days, very bad potholes have formed in many places. Travelers are asked to keep this in mind and drive carefully, but repairs are being made as quickly as possible.

Japan records 37 mn tourists in 2024 thanks to post-Covid global surge and weaker yen

Foreign travellers increased by 47% to a record 36.9 million last year, driven by tourists from South Korea, Taiwan, and China, according to data issued by the Japan National Tourism Organisation on Wednesdayread moreA record number of visitors flocked to Japan in 2024, owing to increased post-pandemic worldwide tourism and a weakening yen, making the island nation an appealing and inexpensive destination.Foreign travellers increased by 47% to a record 36.9 million last year, driven by tourists from South Korea, Taiwan, and China, according to data issued by the Japan National Tourism Organisation on Wednesday. The previous high was 31.9 million tourists in 2019, just before Covid-19 halted foreign travel.AdvertisementAccording to the most recent data, the country is well on track to surpass 60 million foreign tourists by 2030. This is owing, in part, to Japan’s reputation as a far more cheap tourism destination, while being one of the world’s most developed economies. As the yen fell to a 37-year low last year, incoming visitors found it much more cheap to dine, travel, and spend at luxury stores. The number of international visitors visiting Japan also set a new record for a single month in December, thanks in part to increasing regional connections connecting South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, according to the JNTO. The weak yen has also hampered outbound travel, with the number of Japanese travelling overseas remaining at 13 million in 2024, 35% lower than in 2019.As more visitors arrive in Japan, public resentment has grown as they overcrowd public transportation, restaurants, and sights popular with residents. In May, local officials in Fujikawaguchiko, a holiday town on the outskirts of Mt. Fuji, constructed a barrier at a famous social media destination where the landmark appears to float above a convenience store, to restrict the influx of tourists. In Kyoto’s old city, where overtourism is more prevalent, a local district council has barred visitors from the tiny private lanes of the Gion area, where tourists harassed and pursued geisha for photographs, now known as “geisha paparazzi.” That was regarded as one of the elements that contributed to the election win of Kyoto’s new mayor in February, whose campaign promise was to combat tourist excesses.AdvertisementThese occurrences have spurred others to explore strategies to stop the flow, such as charging foreigners greater costs. For example, the city of Himeji is considering raising the cost of admission to its castle for international visitors.Japan is attempting to shift travel demand to rural areas where recovery has been gradual, rather than big metropolitan areas where development has been focused. The overall number of foreign visitors to Japan grew 14% in three main urban regions in 2023 compared to 2019, while the recovery in rural areas has been gradual, with a 26% reduction, according to the government’s white paper issued in June last year.AdvertisementEnd of Article

US bans all Chinese, Russian tech in passenger cars citing national security reasons

For now, the ban will apply to passenger vehicles weighing under 10,001 pounds, but there are plans to extend it to include larger vehicles like buses and trucks down the line. The restrictions will be rolled out in two phasesread moreThe United States has just announced a major new rule banning Chinese and Russian technology from passenger vehicles sold in the country, with national security concerns at the forefront. This ban targets both software and hardware from these countries and is part of a broader effort to reduce China’s influence in key industries like automotive tech.  It’s a significant step in the ongoing drive to keep foreign tech out of sensitive areas, including drones and other advanced technologies.AdvertisementProtecting cars & American infra from foreign influenceThis move builds on President Joe Biden’s push to tighten control over technologies linked to China and Russia. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo pointed out that modern cars are packed with technology like cameras, microphones, GPS, and internet connectivity.  While these features make driving easier and safer, they also open the door to spying or interference, especially if they rely on foreign-made tech. The goal here is simple: prevent Chinese and Russian technology from making its way into American cars to keep them safe from potential misuse.Two-phase rollout and the global impactFor now, the ban will apply to passenger vehicles weighing under 10,001 pounds, but there are plans to extend it to include larger vehicles like buses and trucks down the line. The restrictions will be rolled out in two phases. First, there’s the software ban, which will kick in starting with the 2027 model year. Then, by 2030, a hardware ban will take effect. The main focus will be on companies with strong ties to China or Russia, preventing them from selling cars that include foreign technology for things like internet connectivity or self-driving features. Plus, any imports of these technologies from China and Russia will be restricted. One company that could be impacted is BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle giant with a manufacturing facility in California that produces buses and other vehicles. There’s growing concern in the US that foreign-built tech in connected vehicles could lead to security risks, like the misuse of sensitive data or interference with vital vehicle systems.Shaping America’s future tech landscapeThis ban is part of a wider strategy to strengthen US industries and reduce reliance on foreign technologies. On the same day, President Biden signed an executive order to fast-track the development of AI infrastructure within the country. He made it clear that the US can’t afford to fall behind in building the technologies that will shape the future, particularly in industries like artificial intelligence and autonomous driving. With Biden preparing to pass the baton to President-elect Donald Trump, it’s unclear how the incoming administration will handle these new policies. While many expect Trump to shake up government strategies, it’s likely that some of these national security measures will remain a central focus moving forward.Editor’s PicksEnd of Article

Intuition is a powerful tool in the realm of business leadership. The significance of intuitions can be seen in the light of the fact that they are available to everyone, and every leader has experienced them in some form or another as they have added to their lives. It is an inner spark that is positive, subtle, and creative. It enhances the energy of the person experiencing it, and being in a great energy zone enhances intuition.Intuitions are a game changer for driving success. Through intuition, various aspects, such as signing a deal with a potential client, hiring staff, and many other parameters, can be identified with ease. The internal navigation system would always have an answer to your challenges and questions. Only the strength to show up and receive guidance without judging it would be the key.Intuition is the most important tool in business leadership, as the direction of business and changing the outside parameters can cause constraints, but intuition, being a part of you, is always available to overcome your constraints.

What approaches can be taken to strike a harmonious balance between conventional business strategies and the integration of intuitive insights within coaching sessions?Strategies are formulated from the space of a lot of statistics, and statistics involve market research, past experiences, and all that plays with logic. In business, if you operate only from the conventional side of logic, you can reach a limited expansion. With intuition, the realm is much wider and bigger. The decision-making that happens from the space of intuitions helps in energetic expansion with ease. As an example, if you have a container of 20 litres, you can only fill it up to 20 litres, but when you have a bigger container, you can accommodate more water. Same is with energy & intuitions. When your energetic container expands, you create a lot of space for growth and expansion with ease. You do not look for strategies. Strategies don’t work unless you work. The best of strategies may fail for businesses if they lack energetic alignment, and the worst of strategies may create wonders if there is energetic alignment between the business and its revenue goals. To find harmonious balance, businesses start with energetic alignment integrated into business strategies for greater success and expansion. Within coaching sessions, finding the root cause of misalignment, replacing the misalignment with energy spaces of alignment, and then from the space of knowing that the results are certain, inspired actions are chalked to take into the outside world. In the context of business leadership, how do professionals go about harmonizing a leader’s personal values with the broader mission and vision of their organization? This is a classic example of the conflict that may arise between a leader’s values and the broader mission and vision of their organization. Alignment for organizational success is all about professionals not only aligning with the vision and mission of the organization but also connecting with their values to feel fulfilled and empowered. In case of a potential conflict, the professionals can:1. Redefine the reason for their association with their role and organization.2. Connect with their inner selves to identify synergy between the organizational mission and the value they can bring to make it happen.3. Work for the space of strength to add value.4. Express themselves and talk about the space of conflict to find possible solutions.Awareness is the first step to recognizing this internal conflict. Expressing oneself can help professionals identify new pathways to establish connections.Could you delve into the role that intuition plays in the realms of crisis management and decision-making when it comes to business leaders?Intuition plays a huge role in crisis management. In times of crisis, the energy with which you operate means a lot. Intuitions can guide you out of a crisis situation and provide you with opportunities for out-of-the box, creative ideas.Decision-making through intuition helps leaders scale with ease. The whole game of logic only gives decision-making a limited horizon. The arena of knowing and working from logic keeps shrinking the possibilities a leader can delve into.Decision-making based on intuition opens up unlimited possibilities. It considers the person who he or she is in this moment, and thus you are not carrying any baggage from the past to stop you. What tactics are utilized to assist business leaders in maintaining equilibrium between intuitive thinking and analytical reasoning during their decision-making processes? As a coach, the intervention is helping the business leader create a pause for self-reflection, giving them a safe space to see themselves through a non-judgmental lens. Being in the space of reflective inquiry, business leaders are able to carve their path first through intuitive alignment and then through the energetic shift, coming up with inspired actions for specifically implementing them in the real world. The analytical reasoning is just a tiny part of the whole decision-making process, adding to the inputs. The decisions flowing through intuition are the powerful ones that consider the person as who he or she is in this moment, having these strengths and capabilities. The role of past experiences is not there, which makes it easy to master and expand the realm of possibilities. Intuitions give rise to creativity, and creative decisions are always the ones that expand energy. How do professionals gauge and evaluate the effectiveness of coaching interventions, particularly in terms of their impact on business outcomes?Coaching interventions impact life and business holistically. Specifically, as a business outcome, professionals receive increased revenue by tapping into premium clients, attracting the right employees with aligning values, and exploring various avenues for growth and expansion. All of this at ease. The numbers growing in all areas, along with the peace, ease, and connection with loved ones, along with enjoying the best health, are the holistic examples of expansion one can feel as an outcome of coaching interventions. Releasing the layers, reducing the burden, genuinely creating that progress, feeling light in approaching people for sales or business, and being able to establish business and personal connections with no effort is a testament to alignment, which is achieved through the powerful space of coaching.
