Renowned for its gothic castles, acclaimed museums and deadly cheap booze, Prague attracts more than 5.8 million tourists a year – that’s around 6.3 tourists for every local – and that number is only heading up. In the peak season (June – August) you can expect crowds of self-stick-waving tourists, long queues for attractions, restaurant reservations booked up weeks in advanced, and a surge in hotel and flight prices. Temperatures can also exceed 30C which, for us pasty Brits, is only pleasant if we’re lounging on the beach with a cocktail in hand.
However, in February, the city becomes much quieter and calm, transforming into a romantic hotspot perfect for Brits wanting a cheap weekend of history, culture, and romance. Just make sure you pack your gloves and scarf, as temperatures will plunge well below freezing – and snowfall is pretty common.

Experts over at Travel and Leisure says February is the perfect time to stroll through the city’s popular Old Town and admire some of the Instagram-worthy architecture. “Take a walk down Karlova Street, which historically was the way Bohemian kings traveled to their coronations, and check out the local shops selling glassware, wooden toys, painted eggs, and other crafts that make great gifts,” they said.

Other popular attractions (and ways to escape the cold) include the Prague Jewish Museum, the National Museum, and the Prague Beer Museum. Carnevale Praha, Czech Republic’s largest carnival, also takes place in February – filling the Old Town with music, folk dances and mask parades.
“The attractions of the festival include concerts, shows, balls, art exhibitions, theatre performances, public and private parties,” explains Praguest. “Numerous carnival events and celebrations for kids take place across the city. Do not miss a vivid spectacle of carnival processions and vibrant costumes.”

You can fly directly to Prague from a slew of major UK airports, including London, Bristol, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, and Newcastle. If you’re flexible with your dates, and don’t mind being limited on your luggage, you can grab return fares in February for as little as £36.
Accommodation in February is much cheaper than the summer months, meaning you can get a great deal – even if you want a luxury experience. For example, a weekend stay at the Grand Hotel Prague Towers – which has a free spa attached to it – will set you back £165. This is based on two people sharing a double or twin room on Friday, February 7 – Sunday 9.
