Outlander enthusiasts are bracing themselves for a nail-biting season seven finale this week, which will reveal the fate of Claire Fraser (portrayed by Caitriona Balfe) following a life-threatening gunshot wound.
As the American Revolution intensifies and Claire’s spouse Jamie (Sam Heughan) becomes more embroiled in the turmoil, the Frasers find themselves in the thick of it in episode 15, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.
Both characters faced danger during the Battle of Monmouth, with Jamie spearheading the fight on the battlefield and Claire utilising her healing skills in a makeshift hospital within a church.
After a clash with sceptical doctor Captain Leckie (Ben Cora), Claire demonstrates that her medical knowledge surpasses that of her male counterparts when she swiftly saves an injured soldier’s life using a clever aspiration technique.
However, the tables turn when a band of retreating British soldiers cross paths with the Continental troops near the church, resulting in a heated exchange that leaves Claire with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, reports the Daily Record.
A distraught Jamie steps down from his position while his wife musters the strength to guide Denzell Hunter (Joey Phillips) through the procedure to save her life. But does Claire survive this harrowing experience in Diana Gabaldon’s novels?
Does Claire meet her end in the books?
After a brief break, the series is set to return and conclude the second-last season with the finale on Friday, January 17, titled A Hundred Thousand Angels.
Fans of the popular Starz series will have to endure another lengthy ‘Droughtlander’ before the eighth and final season, which is anticipated to draw inspiration from Gabaldon’s ninth book, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.
With another season already in the can, it’s almost certain that Claire will return, as Balfe has confirmed she has been filming alongside Heughan. But could the series be planning a surprise twist?
Those who haven’t delved into the novels can breathe easy knowing that Claire does indeed survive her injury.
The episode faithfully adapted the events of the books, where the time-travelling heroine is shot in the abdomen, leaving her with a slim chance of survival.
Thankfully, Denzell manages to extract the bullet after a tense surgical procedure. Despite Claire battling for her life over several chapters, she eventually regains consciousness in chapter 87.
She then retreats to Fraser’s Ridge with Jamie to continue her recovery.
It’s yet to be seen how closely the series will mirror these events, but it’s expected that such a crucial moment in the Fraser saga will remain entirely true to Gabaldon’s original narrative.
While there’s always the possibility of a curveball from the series, given Balfe’s confirmed return in season eight, fans can expect Claire to be alive and relatively well by the finale’s conclusion.
Outlander season seven, part two concludes Friday, January 17 on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK and on Starz in the US.
