During the teen years, career coaches explain that “teens should focus on developing both professional and practical skills,” says Amber Reese, a certified student career coach in Boston, Massachusetts. Reese shares that public speaking, resume writing, and interviewing techniques are essential skills to hone during these formative years. Also, leadership clubs and volunteer work provide crucial hands-on experience. “Most importantly, teens need opportunities to explore their interests through job shadowing and internships to understand what career paths might suit them best,” Reese adds.
In addition to enhancing essential skills, teens should also develop efficient communication and interpersonal abilities through networking opportunities. “This includes learning how to effectively communicate with professionals, understanding workplace etiquette, and building relationships with potential mentors and colleagues,” Reese tells SheKnows.
Are Business Cards for Teens Beneficial?
Recently, there has been an increasing interest in purchasing business cards for teens since both Reese and Horne are witnessing a rise in teens planning for career opportunities. “I have met with students that were interested in obtaining their work permit to get their first job and have worked with many through the process of securing volunteer positions within their community,” explains Tanika Horne, CSCC, and recent graduate of the Certified Student Career Coach program.
“Having a business card can be really beneficial for internships in the future, as well as summer jobs, by showing the employer that you are serious and have your contact information ready and available upon request,” Horne adds. “Being proactive within your journey of gaining experience is key and will continue to open doors along your pathway of success.”
“I’ve particularly noticed a growing trend of teens seeking professional certifications while still in high school,” Reese shares, further proving the need to have a contact card on hand. “They recognize the value of building tangible skills and credentials early.” Below, Horne lists the top certifications to add to their business cards:
CPR and First Aid certification
Adobe Creative Suite proficiency
Google professional certificates
Industry-specific technical certifications
