What to expect at Donald Trump’s inauguration next week

President-elect Donald Trump is set to be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, January 20, alongside Vice President-elect JD Vance. 

Preparations for the inauguration are in full swing, with events scheduled across Washington, D.C, and nearby venues.  

Key events leading up to inauguration day include: 

Saturday, January 18  

A reception and fireworks display will take place at Trump National Golf Club in Virginia. The venue will also host a Cabinet reception and the Vice President’s dinner.  

Sunday, January 19

A wreath-laying ceremony is planned at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. This will be followed by a candlelight dinner at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.  

January 20- Inauguration day schedule 

The day begins with a service at St. John’s Church, followed by tea at the White House.  

Musical performances and opening remarks will start at 9:30 a.m. EST (2:30pm GMT) on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.  

At noon, Trump and JD Vance will take their oaths of office. Trump will then deliver his inaugural address, outlining his vision for the next term.  

A farewell ceremony for outgoing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will follow.  

Post-Inauguration traditions  

After the swearing-in ceremony, Trump will head to the President’s Room near the Senate chamber to sign initial documents, including nominations, memoranda, proclamations, and executive orders.  

He will then attend a luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

Trump will participate in a presidential parade from the Capitol to the White House along Pennsylvania Avenue.  

Evening Celebrations

The incoming US President is expected to attend three inaugural balls; Commander in Chief ball, Liberty Inaugural ball, and starlight ball. 

During the events, Trump is anticipated to deliver remarks.  

The inaugural activities will conclude with the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning.  

Notable Guests 

Outgoing  President Biden and Vice President Harris, along with their spouses Jill Biden and Doug Emhoff, will attend. 

Former presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, along with former first lady Laura Bush, are also expected.  

Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend,  marking the second recent absence from an event involving former U.S. leaders. 

She was also absent from a memorial for former President Jimmy Carter last week, opting to remain in Hawaii.  

Tech leaders Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg have received invitations to the event.  

Trump’s inauguration follows his victory in the November 2024 election, marking his second term in the presidency after serving as the 45th president from 2017 to 2021.  

The White House and major media outlets will livestream the ceremony, ensuring global access to the event.  

With a packed schedule and high-profile attendees, the inauguration promises to be a significant event in U.S. political history.
