Polish, Lithuanian, Estonian and Italian books topped the list and in 2024, as in 2023, the most translated Latvian author and illustrator was Anete Melece.
Five works were published in Polish, four translations were published in Lithuanian, Estonian and Italian, and three works were published in German, English, French, Finnish and Spanish.
Anete Melece’s works were published in seven countries last year, the works of Inga Gaile in four countries and the works of Jānis Joņevs and Sergejs Timofejevs in three.
Of the books published abroad last year, 9 are poetry, 17 are children’s literature, and 19 are prose works, as well as 3 poetry and prose anthologies.
The most popular translated works are still Aneta Melece’s Pazudušais miedziņš (4 translations) and Kiosks (3 translations), as well as Inga Gaile’s Skaistās (3 translations).
“Aneta Melece’s wonderful book characters continue their journey around the world, proving that Latvian children’s literature is competitive. Inga Gaile’s work is not far behind Aneta Melece’s, which can now be found in German, Estonian, Serbian, and Polish, and this year, at the beginning of the year, a translation of Inga Gaile’s Skaistās into Spanish is expected,” said Inga Bodnarjuka, head of the Latvian Literature platform.
