LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A Shively business owner, who’s truck got stolen from his shop’s parking lot Saturday night, said he received a call from someone wanting to sell him that same truck.
Saturday seemed like a regular business day for Reinaldo Acosta, who owns R&P Truck Service in Shively. However, when his daughter went back on Sunday morning to open the shop she noticed the gates were severely damaged.
“From home I start checking the cameras and I notice my truck isn’t there,” Acosta, who’s first language is Spanish, told WAVE News.
Acosta said thieves stole one of his trucks valued at $12,000.
“The problem is that that was a service truck that had a lot of valuable tools,” he added.
The small business owner pointed out his security cameras coincidentally stopped recording at the time of the robbery, but surveillance video from neighbors shows the truck driving in the area, followed by a small red car.
However, it’s what happened later that night that freaked him out the most. Acosta remembered how his wife got a strange phone call.
“They told me they had caught the thief and that they had the truck, they asked where to leave it and asked me not to hang up,” he mentioned. “I was like, ‘What is this?! I feel like I’m watching a movie.‘”
The caller asked him for $2,000 to get the truck back. He was also told to not call police. After consulting with the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), Acosta decided not to meet with the caller.
The Cuban-immigrant described the whole ordeal as “disgusting”.
“I came to this country to work hard, not to harm anyone, to move forward,” he commented. “And then we have these shameless people hurting others, living the easy way without caring about what happens.”
Acosta now has to wait to make more money so he can replace the truck. In the meantime he hopes people will reconsider before robbing other business owners.
People with information on the stolen truck are encouraged to reach out to R&P Truck Service by calling 502-380-7428.
