The first Lantern-lit book walk is this Saturday, Jan. 18, starting from the Amphitheater at Ludington State Park. Featured is the children’s book, “One Light,” by Christie Matheson, illustrated by Anuska Allepuz, telling a story with a message you’re never too small to make a difference.
In partnership with Ludington State Park and Friends of Ludington State Park, who do the lantern-lit hikes, Mason-Lake-Oceana Great Start initiative offers the book walk. Placards with pages from “One Light” will line the trail for reading by participants in what has been a popular activity of families.
The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. along the 3/4ths of a mile long lantern-lit trail. Friendly dogs on leashes are allowed. The first 125 families will receive a copy of the book to keep and a worksheet with activities. Free cocoa is offered by FLSP at the amphitheater fire.
“Book walks are a special experience because they bring stories to life in a fun, interactive way that encourages families to enjoy reading together while exploring the outdoors. Each stop on the walk allows children and parents to engage with the story, creating a shared, memorable experience that combines literacy with movement,” Sara Jeruzal, Mason-Lake-Oceana Great Start Collaborative Coordinator, noted.
“Coupled with lantern-lit hikes, the magic is amplified. The soft glow of the lanterns creates a cozy, enchanted atmosphere, making the story feel even more exciting and immersive. Walking through nature under the lights sparks curiosity and allows children to connect the story’s themes … with their surroundings.
“These events foster community, inspire a love for reading, and offer families a chance to unplug and bond while experiencing the joy of books in a whole new way.”
Parking is available in the amphitheater lot and along one side of the road except for on curves due to potentially slippery conditions.
With the freeze and thaw conditions this year, bringing ice grippers for boots might be a good idea.
The event is free, but donations to FLSP are accepted in lit-donation buckets on site.
The second lantern-lit book walk will be Feb 1. and the final lantern-lit hike (without a book walk) is Feb, 15.
