Legendary filmmaker David Lynch has passed away at the age of 78. Several Hollywood stars who worked with him and filmmakers mourned his death with a heartfelt tribute.
The visionary icon is known for directing films such as Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, and many more. He also co-created the groundbreaking series Twin Peaks.
Here are the stars and filmmakers who mourned the passing of Lynch.
Kyle MacLachlan
Kyle MacLachlan was a frequent collaborator of Lynch as he starred in Twin Peaks and the films Blue Velvet and the 1984 adaptation of Dune.
In his lengthy tribute on Instagram, the Emmy nominee highlighted his friendship with the filmmaker and the lessons he learned from his experience working with him.
“I will miss him more than the limits of my language can tell and my heart can bear. My world is that much fuller because I knew him and that much emptier now that he’s gone,” he wrote.
Naomi Watts
Another frequent collaborator of Lynch, Naomi Watts also paid tribute to her in a lengthy statement on her Instagram post. They notably worked together in Mulholland Drive.
She wrote in her post, “It wasn’t just his art that impacted me – his wisdom, humor, and love gave me a special sense of belief in myself I’d never accessed before.”
“I just cannot believe that he’s gone. I’m in pieces but forever grateful for our friendship. I’m yelling from the bullhorn: Godspeed, Buddy Dave! Thank you for your everything. —Buttercup xox.”
Steven Spielberg
Iconic filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who worked with Lynch on his most recent film The Fabelmans where he played John Ford, paid tribute to the visionary director as well.
Aside from referencing their collaboration, the director wrote, “The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.”
Nicolas Cage
Nicolas Cage, who worked with Lynch in Wild at Heart, paid tribute to the filmmaker by calling his experience with him the most fun he’s ever had working on a film set.
“He was brave, brilliant, and a maverick with a joyful sense of humor. I never had more fun on a film set than working with David Lynch. He will always be solid gold,” he said in a statement.
Mel Brooks
Another legendary filmmaker and comedian Mel Brooks, who produced Lynch’s sophomore film The Elephant Man, highlighted the late director’s unique talent and called his passing a “sad loss.”
“A huge and sad loss. A remarkably unique and very talented filmmaker. It was such a truly great pleasure to work with him. If his name was in the credits, you knew the film was really worth seeing. I will miss him,” he wrote in his post on X.
Lara Flynn Boyle
Twin Peaks star Lara Flynn Boyle called Lynch the “Willy Wonka of filmmaking” in her statement that paid tribute to the filmmaker following his passing.
“There goes the true Willy Wonka of filmmaking. I feel like I got the golden ticket getting a chance to work with him. He will be greatly missed,” she said.
Another Twin Peaks star Mädchen Amick also paid tribute to Lynch in her recent Instagram post.
She highlighted how the late filmmaker became her mentor when she starred in the series and their friendship throughout the years.
“It’s hard for me to find the words to express the loss of, yes, a masterful genius but more importantly, a simply wonderful guy. David Lynch was my mentor. How lucky was I? He was also my dear friend,” Amick wrote.
“Always there for a random check-in, or life-changing advice. He was my north star. He watched me grow up. He watched me become a mother. He cheered me on when I stepped into the director’s chair. I will hold those long conversations we had in his home on the hill very close to my heart.”
