Jim Carrey has shared the one film he “regrets” making, and it’s due to a heartbreaking reason.
The 62-year-old Hollywood icon, known for his roles in comedy classics like Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, and Bruce Almighty, expressed disappointment over one of his later supporting roles that altered his perspective on future projects.
Fans were heartbroken to discover that Carrey no longer appreciates his performance in the action-comedy, despite their belief that he was “great” in the movie. However, real-world events influenced the comedian’s view of the feature. Following the release of the 2013 film, Carrey pledged not to participate in any more violent films.
True to his word, since Kick-Ass 2, he hasn’t appeared in any similarly violent movies.
He clarified that it wasn’t the film itself that changed his mind, but the devastating events that happened shortly after. Carrey stated: “I did Kick-Ass a month before Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence.”
“I meant to say my apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.” In Kick-Ass 2, Carrey portrays a former Mafia member turned born-again Christian, Colonel Stars and Stripes.
While his comments about the film’s violence may have led to a “change in [his] heart,” they left the film’s producer, Mark Millar, perplexed. Around the time of Carrey’s comments in 2013, Millar penned a blog post suggesting that nothing in the film should have come as a surprise to the actor or the rest of the cast.
He expressed his confusion, stating: “I’m baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn’t in the screenplay 18 months ago.”
Millar argued that a sequel to Kick-Ass, which introduced the character Hit Girl, would inevitably involve some level of violence, and that this should not have been a shock to Carrey, who had enjoyed the first film.
He emphasised that the film was not a documentary and that no actors were harmed during its production. Despite Carrey’s denouncement of his role, fans continue to appreciate his work in Kick-Ass 2, with one Reddit user praising his performance.
They wrote: “Oh dang, I knew Jim Carrey avoided acting in violent movies nowadays, but I didn’t realise he regrets his role in Kick-Ass 2. However, his performance in Kick-Ass 2 is REALLY good, because I didn’t even realise it was him until I read a YouTube comment saying that it was him.”
