Now that Silo season 2 has finally ended, I think it’s a good time to discuss all the possible storylines we can expect from season 3. But before moving forward, I am sure most of you might be wondering if the show has been renewed or not. Well, the good news is Apple TV+ has already renewed Graham Yost’s Silo for two more seasons with the series likely concluding with the fourth season. The second season of the show ends exactly at the same point where the first book in the trilogy ends. Based on this information, it will be safe to assume that the third and fourth seasons of Apple TV’s Silo will follow the second and third book of the trilogy, i.e., “Shift” and “Dust,” respectively. With that said, let’s jump straight into some spoilers from the book to see what we can expect from Silo season 3.
Book Spoilers Ahead
A Promise Made Will Be A Promise Kept
A person who has literally lost everything in life understands the value of a promise more than anyone else. Juliette Nichols isn’t the kind of person who will make any promises she can’t keep. That was the reason why she was quite hesitant when the Silo 17 survivor, Hope, asked her if she would be coming back for them. Juliette wasn’t sure if she would be able to return or not, but when Jimmy asked her again, she said nothing would stop her from trying. The thing is, Jimmy and the other survivors didn’t know how much time they were left with. Jimmy had opened the vault for the residents, but those rations wouldn’t last forever. These people would eventually meet their tragic fate if no help came from outside sooner or later.
I know the second season of Silo ended on a cliffhanger without revealing Juliette’ fate, but she isn’t going to die. I mean, no one literally casts Rebecca Ferguson to kill her character off when the better part of her story has just kicked off. Juliette will survive the flames, mostly because of her makeshift firefighter suit, and when things have cooled down for a bit, she will work on the promise she had made to Jimmy. The only concern is that no one’s going to let her do that, and maybe that’s one of the conflicts Juliette will be dealing with in Silo season 3.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
Even though the second book of the Silo trilogy acts as a prequel to the first book, “Wool,” I am quite certain that the show isn’t going to follow the same pattern. The ending of season 2 dropped a head-scratching flashback sequence, before the silos came into being. I guess it’s just the congressman, Donald Keene, remembering major events from the past, like how he met the love of his life, Helen, and how he got separated from her. In short, the third season of Silo will feature more flashback sequences from the congressman’s point of view while simultaneously dealing with a new crisis in Silo 18 in the present timeline. The past timeline will likely dwell on the creation of the silos and the events that forced everyone to take shelter in the underground bunkers.
The New Dynamics in Silo 18
I am not sure if the show’s version of Bernard is going to die or not, but even if he survives, the residents are not going to accept him in any capacity. This means in Silo season 3, we will have a new mayor and a new IT head. The ending of season 2 suggests that the Algorithm might choose Camille Sims for IT head, but even in such a case, the position of the Mayor will remain vacant. I guess, fresh elections will be conducted in season 3, and if the books are to be followed, then Juliette will become the next mayor of Silo 18. She will use her power and position to promote peace and equality among all levels, something Bernard had failed to achieve during his tenure. She will also have the uphill task of convincing people that the world outside isn’t safe for them to live in. I know that’s not exactly accurate because some places on Earth have already recovered from the harmful effects of the radioactive explosion. But the conflict here is, no one really knows the truth, and that’s what Juliette and the others will try to figure out in the third and fourth season. The introduction of the PEZ dispenser in the closing sequence of season 2 hints at a possibility that Donald can make contact with Juliette or Camille through the Algorithm and may genuinely try to help them to save their silo from being terminated. In the book, Donald and the other important residents of Silo 1 managed to cheat time all these years with the help of the cryofreeze technology so that they could see the dawn of a new era when the radiation eventually faded from the surface.
Some New Enemies
Truth be told, Bernard was never really the antagonist. He was just a puppet following the directives of the Founders or Silo 1, and I feel this evil will soon be replaced with Camille. The Algorithm and Silo 1 know that Juliette Nichols, a rebel in the true sense of the word, is a direct threat to the established order. And therefore they will try to bring her down by any means possible. However, it will be really difficult to cause her any harm, especially when she enjoys the support of the majority. I am sure Camille’s husband, Robert Sims, will try his best to turn people against her, but that wouldn’t stop Juliette from being who she is. Her father had asked Hank to tell her daughter to never stop fighting, and that’s what she is going to do in Silo season 3.
Also, it is going to be pretty interesting to see Camille finally turning into another Bernard, the man she once hated the most. But it’s not actually her fault. Silo 1 and the Algorithm are known for manipulating residents to turn against each other in order to fulfil their own agenda. I guess that’s one of the transformations we can expect in season 3. Camille will certainly take orders from the Algorithm, believing what she’s doing is to protect her kid, Anthony, and the future of the silo, and while doing so, she will turn into Juliette’s worst adversary in no time. She will do everything in her power to stop Juliette from contacting Silo 17, from helping her friends out there, from disabling the safeguard procedure, and most importantly, from accessing the underground tunnel. In the book, Juliette does become the mayor, but the first season of the show has already made it clear that the mayor doesn’t have any actual powers in the silo, and it is the head of IT who controls everything from top to bottom.
The Mystery Of The Forbidden Tunnel
Assuming Silo 18 doesn’t have additional cleaning suits for the folks stuck in Silo 17, and that Juliette may not get enough time to get any ready, we can speculate that she might want to use the forbidden tunnel, believing it connects to Silo 17. It is possible that the Algorithm or Camille may not let her use the airlock chamber to go outside to deliver the suits to Jimmy and others. In such a case, the forbidden tunnel would be her only option to save her friends and make another trip to Silo 17. Juliette may initiate a secret mission with her friends from Mechanical to dig further into the tunnel to find where it actually leads to. And that might unravel one of the most exciting mysteries of the silo system, i.e., a machine that can be instrumental in their escape from the underground prison.
The ending of season 2 also revealed how the “safeguard procedure” actually works, based on which it could be assumed that Silo 18 still remains under the threat of being wiped out by a poisonous gas that the Algorithm could trigger at any moment if someone like Juliette goes rogue. So, it could be possible that season 3 will dwell deeper into the mystery of the Algorithm. In the book, the shift workers from Silo 1 use an AI-modulated voice to interact with the head of IT and their shadow to dictate them the directives to save their silo from the insurgents. Maybe we’ll get to see something similar to that in the show as well.
A Doomed Romance In The Midst Of Two Crises
Now that the girl our very own Lukas Kyle tried to kiss is back home, he might not leave a stone unturned to woo Juliette and try his luck. Well, Juliette too has been pretty lonely after George Wilkins’ death, and now her father’s sacrifice is certainly going to take an emotional toll on her. This suggests she might need someone to lean on, and yes, I can already see Lukas standing at the door, ready to be there for her. However, the show isn’t faithfully following Lukas’ arc which means there could be some inconsistencies in his storyline. In the book, he loses his life while helping Juliette and others get across the tunnel and we may expect the show’s version of the character meeting a similar fate.
Gwen Conroy May Still Be Alive
In season 2’s ending, Jimmy hinted at the fact that his mother disappeared during the rebellion. This could imply that Gwen Conroy might have escaped Silo 17 during the uprising and might have taken shelter in some other silo. I mean, we haven’t seen her dead body yet, nor could Jimmy find the suit Gwen had made for herself. I presume after the residents of the Silo 17 opened the airlock door and died as soon as the “dust” started to blow outside, Gwen took the suit to find out more about this puzzling mystery about the silos. The crisis is eventually dealt with at the end of the third book, but as the makers of the Apple TV+ show have already introduced the conflict, I believe they are going to explore the mystery further in season 3 and finally resolve it in season 4.
Additionally, I believe that Gwen’s survival is extremely important for the narrative going forward. Jimmy, or Solo, has always been an unreliable narrator who doesn’t exactly know how his parents blocked the poisonous pipe. He just knew that they got rid of the “safeguard procedure” somehow. Jimmy didn’t even know about the Algorithm or how Silo 1 had been meddling with the affairs of the other silos. So, it is important for the protagonist, Juliette, to have one reliable source of information. Silo 1 isn’t just going to hand her the secret intel, which is why Gwen could play a crucial role in solving the mystery. She may even help Juliette to terminate the Algorithm’s access to her silo and save it from being wiped out. In the book, it’s Donald and his younger sister, Charlotte Keene, who help Juliette to save the residents of Silo 18.
The Curious Case of Silo 1
I guess the best way to explain Silo 1 is to say that it is the root of all the evil taking place in the show. All the silos in the system are connected to it through underground cables, using which the HQ controls the lives of everyone who survived the nuclear fallout. They don’t want anyone to leave the underground bunker until and unless their Algorithm has chosen the one lucky silo whose residents will someday see the bright sunlight without a cleaning suit. It could also be speculated that the third season might finally introduce the real bad guy of the show, the American senator responsible for the nuclear fallout and locking everyone in an inescapable bunker.
The underlying hierarchy and control of knowledge is one of the important themes of the show, which Juliette will try to break to make a point that all people are equal and they deserve to know the truth. She has already declared a war on the Founders, and it’s about time when she will be able to put names or faces to her true enemies. The congressman is indeed going to play an important role in Juliette’s war against authority, and with his help, she will finally be able to rescue her people and get them outside, to the safe haven that has been waiting for them for so long, so that humans could once again resettle on the Earth’s surface.
