Thailand has launched a new app for tourists as part of its efforts to restore confidence in the country’s reputation as a go-to travel destination.
This was following a recent surge in cases where Thailand ended up becoming a transit hub to neighboring country Myanmar when cross-border scam syndicates targeted foreigners.
About the app
The “Thailand Tourist Police” app, introduced on Dec. 12, 2024, allows tourists to send messages, photos, and location data for inquiries or emergencies.
It connects to the “1155” tourist police hotline, which operates 24/7 in eight languages.
It even coordinates with the “191” emergency hotline for rapid response.
Tourists in need of urgent help can tap on the red “SOS” button on the app’s main page, and the app will connect with local police immediately.
A total of around 1,000 reports have been received on the tourist police hotline and the app since its introduction, with about 200 emergency calls received in a single day on Monday, Jan. 13, Thai authorities said.
These reports include accidents, crimes, or immigration issues.
No reports of individuals being trapped in Thailand or neighboring areas have been made.
Background
Concerns over safety have left tourists apprehensive about travelling to Thailand following the high-profile abduction of Chinese actor Wang Xing and subsequent reports of other missing Chinese nationals.
According to The Nation, budget carrier Thai Lion Air has reportedly experienced a significant drop in Chinese tourist bookings, coupled with a 20 per cent cancellation rate following the abduction cases.
