Ian Schrager Is Ready to Disrupt the Hotel Industry Again
After cofounding the legendary disco Studio 54, Ian Schrager helped create the concept of a boutique hotel with the 1984 opening of Morgans in New York. Now the 78-year-old Schrager—a man who practically invented velvet rope exclusivity—is focusing on making luxury more inclusive with his Public brand of hotels. “It’s probably the most important idea I’ve ever had,” Schrager told Forbes.com. “Making luxury available and accessible to everybody and anybody is kind of a modern democratic ideal. Luxury is not about material things anymore—it’s a feeling, about being able to enjoy, relax and feel secure.”

This year, Singapore reclaimed the top spot as the world’s most powerful passport with visa-free access to 195 of the 227 global destinations included in the list. Japan is ranked second with access to 193 countries, and there is a six-way tie for third, with France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Finland, and South Korea offering access to 192 destinations. The United States fell to No. 9 in the world with visa-free access to 186 countries.
