Meghan Markle‘s team reportedly explored the idea of a book centered around her life “post-divorce” from Prince Harry, despite the couple not actually splitting up. According to a source cited in Vanity Fair, Markle’s representatives had discussions with an unnamed publisher to gauge interest in such a project.
The timeline of these conversations remains unclear, but the book was allegedly intended to explore life after a hypothetical split from Harry-not her first husband, Trevor Engelson, whom she divorced in 2014. The source emphasized that this wasn’t meant to be a general commentary on the dissolution of marriages but specifically focused on Markle’s life following a theoretical separation from Harry.
While the meeting reportedly took place, the insider clarified it didn’t indicate that the Sussexes were headed for a breakup. Instead, it was described as a way to test the waters with publishers. “Theoretically,” the source said, the idea was floated only as a possibility, should such an event ever occur.
Another source didn’t deny the meeting but suggested that if it did happen, Markle may have been approached by the publisher rather than initiating it herself. Vanity Fair reported that no manuscript was created and no offer was made, as there was no actual divorce to write about.
A look at life after hypothetical split from Harry
The Sussexes are currently under a four-book deal with Penguin Random House, but Markle has only released a children’s book so far. Speculation about marital issues between Harry and Meghan had surfaced months earlier, particularly in late 2024, when royal watchers noted they hadn’t made joint appearances for about a month.
Royal biographer Angela Levin commented at the time, saying their professional relationship appeared to be “in a very bad state.” Levin added, “They say they’re going to work separately, then they say they’re buying a house in Portugal-you don’t do that if you don’t want to separate for most of the time.”
Harry addressed these rumors during the New York Times’ 2024 DealBook Summit, dismissing them with humor. “Apparently we’ve bought or moved house 10, 12 times. We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well. So it’s just like, what?” he said, adding, “It’s hard to keep up with, but that’s why you just sort of ignore it.“
Despite ongoing speculation, an insider told Vanity Fair that Harry and Meghan remain deeply connected. “You know how you meet those couples where you’re like, the way they’re looking at each other, I should probably not be here right now?” the source remarked.
